rudebhoy
flying down to bristol and getting picked up by mate with camper van. can't fly back as the flight times are shit (6am or 6pm!) so am gonna get a lift back up to Leeds with my mate and catch a train to Newcastle from there. Been looking at train tickets. Hard to predict with any certainty what time we'll get to Leeds, so I thought an Anytime single would be the best option. However that costs £39 while a ticket for a specific train is around £11. Anyone got any idea what the cost will be if I just buy a ticket when I get to the station? Tried to find a phone number for Leeds Railway Ticket Office to ask them, but have had no joy.
joshwarrr
The price will be close to £39. Why don't you book when for the evening sometime. It would mean waiting around for a while but it would be cheap.
pie_and_a_pint
National Rail Enquiries 08457 48 49 50 should be able to furnish you with all the details you need. Either that or look up on Google the name of the train company that you'll be using and call them direct - I don't think you can actually phone rail stations these days. ukslim
One tip to cut the cost of train journeys is to break the journey up into smaller stretches, and buy tickets for each one. That is, it's often much more expensive to get a ticket Bristol -> Leeds, than it is to get Bristol -> Reading, Reading -> Birmingham, Birmingham -> Sheffield, Sheffield -> Leeds. Try it, it works. Frankly I think it's a disgrace that this works: suggests that the train companies are conning us. But there you go.
pie_and_a_pint
That's a good point ukslim. I think the OP is only travelling Leeds-Newcastle so I don't know whether there's a logical way to break that journey up...
