Not letting that go. Automatic For The People kicks it all over the shop, as does New Adventures In HiFi. Different Class and This Is Hardcore are both so far out of Brown and Squire's league that it's unreal. Seriously mate, you need to listen to more music.

...and AFTP isn't even REM's best album! Life's Rich Pageant is almost perfect, but I didn't include it as it was before 1989....glad to see you mentioned new adventures in hifi in the same sentence as AFTP though, seriously underrated album.

I'm reminded (bear with me on this) about an anecdote a mate told me about meeting an American on a skiing holiday. The American opined "everyone knows that the USA is the greatest country in the world."

My mate was astonished at this blanket statement, but instead of trying to give a counterexample, he just said "It's not like there's a league table".

As much as magazines like to put together "100 greatest albums of all time" lists, in reality it's so subjective and multi-dimensional as to be meaningless.

For me, the greatest record ever made is often the one I last listened to.

Alright, the greatest record ever made is Cake's "Fashion Nugget".

As for the Stone Roses, I like Fool's Gold, but the rest of it doesn't really speak to me.

I love the Stone Roses, but I actually think the self-titled album is a bit shit as a whole. I'd much rather listen to the Complete Stone Roses compilation which includes Elephant Stone, Fool's Gold, and some great early stuff (where Ian Brown proves that he was once able to sing).

And it does annoy me how some people treat bands like football teams. Way too many Mancs think the Roses are the be-all and end-all of rock music. Support your local club, sure, but music is art! Open your mind!
