Thank god we've got a public service broadcaster, otherwise how would we get "Cash in the Attic", "Homes under the Hammer" and The National Lottery Show with Scott Mills ;)

Yeah, I know what you mean.

The Simpsons

Scrubs

House

Dirty Sexy Money

Lost

Family Guy

Desperate Housewives

Grey's Anatomy

24

Prison Break

30 Rock

Heroes

Frasier

Damn that "lowest common denominator" model which continues to fund programmes that people actually like to watch. It's madness!

This isn't about the quality of the BBC, or the value for money. Both of which I don't think should really be called into question.

It's about forcing people to pay for something non-essential that they may not want to use.

Now, if you want to go down the route of arguing that the BBC provides an essential service (education programming, programming for the disabled etc) and that everyone should pay for it then I would say two things to you...

A ) Why is the BBC not funded by a tax which everyone has to pay, why is it based upon whether you own a TV or Radio?

B ) It needs to be massively scaled back to only provide those essential services which are worthy of public funding. Tax payers should not be forced to pay Graham Norton's salary if they have no intention of watching him.

The BBC are better than most, as someone else said sky is w*nk. Just wish they wouldn't have blerts like Kelvin McKenzie on, the news seems to have gone more tabloid to me.

JUSTICE FOR THE 96 flag for glasto I reckon.

Heh - yes, I suppose I have hijacked the thread somewhat. Apologies.

Getting back to my original opinion voiced though, this was really a statement about whether we should have a choice or not, regardless of whether we think the BBC is good value for money (a more subjective argument based on the sort of programming you prefer).

However, to an extent its also about the way in which any progress towards giving people this choice in this now digital era, is stifled. From some of the comments on here, its also about the tactics of the TVLA on behalf of the corporation.

For example: consider some of the less reactionary reports and anecdotal evidence from:

http://www.marmalade.net/lime/

http://www.turnoffyourtv.com/international/bbc.html

From here please make up your own minds.

PS: swine flu pandemic risk subsiding now hopefully. :)

Swine flu isn't even a headline on the news anymore (or at least it wasn't last night, this morning or this afternoon)! Please, if we were all going to be forced to stay at home I think we would at least expect it to have been headline news...
