Easy Star All Stars

I've just got back from seeing Easy Star All Stars in birmingham. Neil's had them down as unknown day on the jazz world stage for a while so I asked them what day they're playing on. They told me they're playing 3 different sets on friday, saturday and sunday and that they aren't 100% sure what stages they are on but they think it may be 3 different stages.

They'll be doing a "dub side of the moon" set one day, "radiodread" another and the other set will be "easy stars lonely hearts dub band"

They were absolutely fantastic tonight so i'd recommend going to see at least one of their sets over the weekend if not all 3...

I hope you're right, They didn't know if they were on the pyramid or not but said they really hoped to be. If they get a daytime spot on the pyramid with the TV coverage and exposure that would bring they will most likely sell as many records as they deserve to!

I think they will do, in a slot like Gogol Bordello, Seasick Steve, The Marley Brothers etc have had.

It would make sense, even if the average festivalgoer hasn't heard of the band, they will have definitely have of the songs that they will be covering.

They defo bound to still play Jazzworld at some point I would think. And in my opinion, I could see them doing a slot in The Glade more so than Avalon. :P

Calling all fans of this band.

I like all the three original albums, pretty much equally - barring clashes, which one would you reccommend that I go and see, bearing in mind that, with this band, I'm probably looking mainly to keep my spirits up and have a good ole fashioned skank?

I'm taking a big Floyd fan with me - would he like the "Dark Side" set?

Cheers!

of the three albums, I reckon Dub Side is the best - it feels like more thought has gone into it than the others, those others feel a little like they've been knocked off in an afternoon (tho they're still far from awful, just not as good as they perhaps could have been).

Most Floyd fans I know like or love that album - I'd guess it would only be a floyd purist who would be turned off by the thought of a band doing something a bit different (and dare i say it, original) with the floyd's classic album.

Take 'seminal' albums made by 3 equally dreary rock bands (all the need to complete the set is to cover U2 and RHCP and they've succesfully covered the 5 worst bands of all time), turn them into half-baked cod dub/reggage cover versions and some people seem to be very happy. Isn't musical taste a strange and wonderous beast?

Wow, didn't know that - cheers. Now I've put all those shite CDs that were cluttering up my house out for the binnies could you please tell us who the best 5 bands of all time are so I can go out & buy everything they've ever done?

A more reasonable background summary.

Easy Star is a reggae label in New York.

The Easy Star All Stars is their house band.

Someone had the bright idea of covering Dark Side of the Moon, the whole album, in a reggae/dub style. It was very good. I like it, and I don't even like the original.

That was a great success, so they followed up with a cover of OK Computer. My favourite moment on that one is the intro to Let Down. On the original it's a bit of a filler and a downer. ESAS make it a happy song to dance to.

Now they've done Sgt Pepper. I've not heard that one yet. I'm very tempted to hear it at Glastonbury for the first time...
