I had an interview for a new job this morning which they offered me 20 minutes later, and of course when it came to negotiating salary etc I asked them to honour my prebooked holidays (ie Glasto) and a long weekend for a wedding. May have to work every bank holiday and have no other holidays till October but I don't care- I shall have some extra beer money for Glastonbury

I had trouble getting the Monday off for Bearded Theory (finishes Sunday but I'd have to leave early) and I just sulked like a bastard. I wouldnt talk to no f**ker unless absolutely neccessary, hung my bottom lip to the floor, and kept my eyes below the horizon at all times. I was a proper spoilt tw@ about it for about a month and my manager finally cracked. Difficult to keep up but if you've got the stamina it works

i had a scare when a colleague screwed me over earlier in the year. she hadn't even registered for a ticket, let alone bought one, but she knew that i was going. we have a communal email account and i saw her holiday request in it to the boss. little did she know i'd covered my back when i was offered the job back in november when i was asked about any pre-booked holidays. the troll. but it was awkward for a week or 2.

this is of no help whatsoever. i'm sorry. i hope you somehow get sorted though. i imagine you can only hope that your request was pre-anyone elses. it means shafting your colleagues but all's fair in love and glasto. ummm...or lie

in fact, knowing what supermarkets are like, go to your managers manager and say that you handed in a holiday form in february, you had nothing back saying you couldnt have them so on the strength of that you booked glastonbury for £175. Then says its only now that you've been told you cant have the hols and that the tickets have your photo on so you cant sell them on. voice your concerns that you are £175 out of pocket because of bad management practices. im sure with a bit of pressure they'll fold and give you the time off rather than risk you going on the sick

this.

i got refused time off at short notice for a very important (to me) gig a few years ago. after creating hell and getting nowhere i informed my boss that i would be ill those particular days. she said i'd be disciplined and possibly sacked. i said that i was fully aware of this but i was being polite about it so she could get cover in. after stewing at me for a couple of hours she caved and gave me the days off.

It's going to be a bit suspicious now if you have a sickie on the exact dates that you asked for but were refused time off so you'll have to do some careful thinking.

I wouldn't pull the Swine Flu. Knowing your luck they'll test you and shut the whole supermarket down as a precaution in case someone else catches it Then it will be worse than being dropped in the long drops if you are found out.

an old job i had a few years back 'forbid' time off during the august bank holiday.

In liverpool we have quite abit going on durring that time 'cream fields' and 'the mathew street festival' fall on that weekend and cos i was working in a hotel, and i was the only 'night-time-walkie-talkie-holder-sorter-of-most-trivial-things-like-broken-tellys-and-spare-towl-keeper' i wanst aloud to have it off for Leeds festival (you'll see in my sig i go quite abit)

the first year i told them it was already booked so tough shit, the second year, i just worked till wednesday night and then went anyway. ;)

and i didnt have the balls to go back ;):D

a wanted a new job anyway .....

This was a real problem for me, being a school caretaker i can't have any holidays during term time, and as jobs are so hard to get i did not want to rock the boat by going sick, after a bit of negotiation i have managed to get the Friday off, with the cleaners agreeing to help out in locking up the school, and living 20 miles from Glaston helps as i have loads of free time during the day so i can go on either Wednesday or Thursday to pitch our tents, arriving Thursday about 7pm for the festival.....Thing to do was plan well ahead, it will be a real bummer if you can't sort anything out

For working in a supermarket it all falls down to a few things:

How well do you get on with your line manager and other members of staff?

Are you the sort who works hard and do other people favours and can call on people to return them?

and what department you are in?

I have been working at tesco for 3 years and the best advice ive got is to first try and get your hours covered all the students will be on holiday there must be someone needing shifts.

Failing that find the people who work the shit shifts basically friday evening all of sat and sunday morning if you can cover there shifts in return for the weekend off or if there is tons of overtime pick up double your normal hours if you are part time in exchange for holidays.

Of course not always easy if you work in a small department and no one likes you etc etc.

If you work in a big department or one that can call nearly anyone to work in like grocery and you get on with your manager just tell him or her that you will be taking the days off anyway and I have found that they will usually just pay you for them and find shift cover.

FINALLY the last option as with most companies im sure the company will not tell you your rights and what you are supposed to get holiday pay break wise up front but you are intitiled to take unpaid leave your boss won't thank you for doing this however but its glastonbury!

When I started my current job a few years back in 2003, I had stuff to do towards the end of every month, so I was refused the time off was gutted and missed Radiohead. I'd missed them in 1997 due to being in the dance tent, so was really looking forward to it.

It was a career job, so I'd glad I didn't blow anything by throwing a really obvious sickie. It's worked out pretty well for me there. Because I showed good faith back then, I've been allowed the time off to go back to Pilton for 2005,2007,2008 (and soon. 2009)

I've still not seen Radiohead live, missed them playing in Manchester last June- I was in a field somewhere down south instead ;-)

ha well done for not pulling a sicky

my manager has told me I'm also not allowed Glastonbury off, which is ridiculous as i booked it off months ago (he's just a nob) and I'm also not allowed Reading off as there are 6 others going from work lol rather annoyed!

luckily I'll hopefully be going to uni in September so plan to somehow not get fired due to glasto, then quit before reading (Y) or hope than manager leaves soon, festivals come before bloody pizza hut!
