I take all those points, but big headliners don't necassarily put bums on seats, there are loads of other factors, it sold out this year before a single act confirmed.

yup!

i go to glastonbury because of the music, the scale, and whats on offer.

couldnt care less if every stage had a brand to go along with it. as long as it doesnt get silly with 20 minutes of ads inbetween the bands for their products.

True, but at the moment i can just about ignore it.

As long as a steer clear of the 'chill n charge' tent, some of the beer tents, i can kind of get by.

Q and the Guardian cover the festival quite well in my opinion, and with them being publications (although commercialised i know) its still okay to see them around.

What really gets on my nerves is brands trying to associate themselves with the feeling you get when you are somewhere you enjoy. They have nothing to do with it. I'm already happy and chilled at Gl;asto, without some marketing executive's slogan telling me to 'chill', and that 'life's for sharing'

while Glastonbury has some sponsorship, compared to sponsorship at other festivals it's very minimal.

I'd personally prefer it to have none, but without the sponsorship it has there would be no Q Daily, no phone recharge facilities, no Queens Head, and very possibly quite a few less stages and bands to play on stages.

While I don't generally get to see the Q Daily, I've never recharged my phone at a fest, and I've never been in the Queens Head, I'd guess that these things have a lot of appeal for many of the people that go.

And I reckon I'd certainly miss some of the stages that would be likely to be lost, because (some of) the smaller stages probably aren't seen as financially viable on a commercial basis - after all, people in the main buy their tickets for the big famous acts and aren't attracted by the more sideshow type stuff.

Good post, and I agree with all of that, although I'm not sure the ability to recharge your phone is a huge selling point.

That's the bit I don't get on here, some people on one day say 'It's not about the bands' and the same people on the next say 'We've got to have big bands';)

I really have no problem with corporate sponsorships at Glastonbury, because they are all on the festival's terms.

It lets Carlsberg in the most prominent bars, but there's still all kinds of other bars where you can get all other kinds of drinks

It's let's Q have a tent which they have to pay for and they put bands on and provide the festival with the daily newspaper.

When it comes to sponsorship, the festival holds all the cards. And the money raised from it allows the festival to be put on as it is with all the smaller stages and things like the Greenfields. And it contributes to the charity donation. Isn't that kind of funny? That these companies are paying for people to be there to show an alternative to what they are?

having checked this out, it's like this....

Playstation have been part-funding the Queen's Head for a number of years, but without any branding from their involvement. This year things are being expanded a little with a dedicated tent for Playstations, but it will not be branded.

I guess with phone batteries now lasting much longer it's less of an issue than it was.

But early this decade it was defo a selling point for the phone obsessed numpties - if I'm remembering rightly, to the point that at least one licencing authority for one fest (I forget which one now) made having a recharge facility a licence condition, on a supposed health and safety basis (yes, I think that's at the point of stupidity too!).

No you're not alone. I think this story is sick.

It was bad enough replacing the Leftfield with this garbage, but now more corporate branding(and free tickets for the corporate whores) is (or was) against the ethos of Glaatonbury.

from what I was told by Glasto today when I asked about this there'll be no more branding around these playstations than there has been in previous years - the only difference is that it now has its own tent.

There is plenty out there to cater for the MTV Generation without polluting Glastonbury.

Just book less expensive acts.

Strummercamp, Beautiful Days, and Endorse it in Doreset all manage without selling out to glabal capital.

is eFestivals "global capital"? Cos eFestivals is the main sponsor of Endorse It.

We don't cover the festival in branding (for any fest we sponsor), but for Endorse It we do have a couple of banners on the festival site.

They should have just scrapped the Queens Head instead of moving it and losing Leftfield! Glad that they have moved it at the very least, the sound clash with the other Stage made me really mad last year, MAD I TELL YOU! And that's not normal Glasto behaviour. Is it just me or did the whole place seem a bit chavvy??
