Glasto 2011 ?

I've read on a few message boards and sites and spoke a few people who are in the music "industry" any many of them are saying how there might be a Glastonbury in 2011 and instead take 2012 off as the fallow year because the 2012 Olympics is in and around the same time (July 27-August 12) and it would be too much of a strain to have such a major event only 4 weeks before the Olympics?

Anyone know anything futher about this? :)

All sounds bloody ridiculous...the numbers that go to Glastonbury surely are peanuts compared to the ridiculous overkill and meltdown the Olympics will cause! 175,000 music and festival lovers heading to a large field in Somerset is hardly of concern to Heathrow, the London Underground system, the million plus international tourists that will be coming in and whoever else is getting all silly about things surely? ESPECIALLY 4 weeks BEFORE the damn event!

Cancel V maybe but not Glastonbury!

from what i read it was rumoured they'd change the fallow year for the olympics because of the strain on security perssonel. all the big companies will be involved in massive operations at all the different venues around the SE.

I've heard this in several places too, i pretty much accepted it having read something from Eavis himself, it was something to do with fences or bins or something equally ridiculous, but ye my point i thought it had as good as been accepted.

(not that this is conclusive, it may just as easily be wrong)

its toutued and rumored everywhere, there is basic evidence to suggest this is the idea (eg applications to Mendip DC to run the event etc)

the most "credible" rumors that I have been able to find, revolve around planning manpower of the likes of the Met (why read on), BBC, National Express etc etc..

These boil down to the fact that the team PLANNING the operation that would be responsible for part of the 2012 planning (e.g. the Met's presence at Paddington and Victoria Coach Station, The BBC's special Events team) don't want to have to have a "large scale event" so close to another "large scale event" and that some of the on-the-ground people at 4 weeks to the olympics may be needed for whats best described as a "Dress Rehersal" in London.

Yes a lot of planning these days is simply dusting off last year and reviewing, but I give more credibility to the "Rehearsal", after all its not like what the Scouts for example did - they had an event in 2005 that was a quater of the size of the 2007 event, but run as if it were the 2007 event at the same location- giving time for changes to be made....

after all the chances of the olympic villiage and stadia being "built" by Jan 2012 is unlikely so being able to "test run" before 12 weeks is very unlikely and extreamly costly

but at the end of the day its a rumor.... and if we get a Glasto in 2011 and not one in 2012, well at least then I personally won't be juggling my finances and time off to attend both

And they have to be built long before that. Do you really think that there is going to be cordon of security linking arms around each of the sporting venues from the moment that they are built to the end of the events? It is a nonsense to even start to believe that an army of 24 hour security a month before the games would do anything to stop a terrorist attack taking place when the event is up and running.

I've spent several years 'working' with security on sites. On building sites there is very little. Often none. Hence why I've been able to climb several towers in London without any bother.

Trust me, just because you *think* they are run in a certain way, doesn't mean they actually are.

Some sites yes, some sites no. It varies. You can get places which have been abandoned and stripped, and they'll run dog teams, IR laser trips, the lot. Other places - such as entire car factory, complete with cars, they have two blokes.

I've "visited" nearly 100 sites. First hand experience.

It's besides the point though. You've not got a clue how the security operation for the Olympics will work, neither has your mate, and neither have I.

Just another quick point to Lucy remember that the Olympics is not exclusive to just London!

Surely though if they were to cancel G2012, then most other major festivals would have to take a year off, and things like Wimbledon, Golf Open Championship etc etc
