I can get a hold of English notes if need be. But I'm just wondering will the be OK with Scottish notes, bar, food stalls, shops and the likes? Certain places do (Liverpool for example), some don't in my experience, anyone any idea?

it's legal tender but a shop doesn't have to accept it, like £200 of 2p coins would be legal tender but not necessarily acceptable. it tends to happen where the shop staff are unsure what a real scottish note would look like.

i've never had this problem at glasto. in fact it's only in london i've ever had scottish notes queried.

i'd not worry too much. though you could always ask for english notes if you're withdrawing from a branch to be super-sure.

irons- taking my scabby bankrupt scottish ones as usual. if i happen to find the one stall onsite that doesn't know a scottish note from an albanian one i shall take my custom elsewhere (until i have change or english notes!).

I'm sure you'll pass a cash machine somewhere along your route from Ireland and Scotland, if you're worried then wait until you're in England then go to the cashpoint at the station/motorway services or supermarket, bobs yer uncle.

we've so many different bank notes from all the different banks here its a nightmare trying to get people to take them :D i always ask the bank to give me whatever bank of england notes they have.. usually have to go to a couple of banks to get enough whenever i go to england but saves a lot of hassling with shops and stall holders

It's a real technicality to say its not "legal tender". As the term goes, correctly used, it is not "legal tender", as it is not issued by the Bank of England - but both Scottish and NI notes have status as "promissory notes", and are normally usable anywhere.

I've never had problems using BoE notes in Scotland, where they aren't legal tender either, nor using Scottish notes in Liverpool. Never tried at Glastonbury. I got in trouble when I was working as a teenager in a downmarket freezer centre for accepting a Scottish note because the manager insisted it was "illegal". This is the same woman who overruled me that the Verve song on the radio was The Drugs Don't Work, and not as it actually was Bittersweet Symphony, because she was the boss, so you can see the mentality of those who won't accept them :D
