Wouldn't touch it. They always left tonnes of stuff behind at the wickerman for the litter crew etc. to clean up. I do hope they have more respect for the Forest of Ae.

Personally going to Knockengorroch 2 weeks latter the only truly independant small festival left.

I know what Viking Jeff means about Knockengorroch being the real thing... there's something about festivals that have evolved organically over many many years... I find a lot of the newer festies, even if they are independent, have a feeling that someone's gone to the festival megastore and 'bought' all the components off the shelf: "What does a festival have? ooh, a main stage, another stage, a few workshops and healers, stalls... oh look, here's a bumper pack with a couple of each included...".

I'm not saying Eden will be like this, but many feel like that to me. It's a subtle thing. The ones left that don't fit that mould - that stand out to me as having real individuality - are Knockengorroch, Glastonbury, BeatHerder, Croissant Neuf, Secret Garden Party, Northern Green Gathering (when it happens)... and I would've said BGG.

I'm not trying to diss any other festivals, just expressing something I've been feeling for the last couple of years. Does anyone know what I mean? I'm always on the lookout for other examples of 'the real thing', so feel free to let me know of any others I haven't discovered yet... :-)

Please note that when I said some new festivals don't feel as great as my old favourites, I specifically said "I'm not saying Eden will be like this". And I didn't slate any particular festivals at all.

My post was a philosophical old-hippy waffle, about how I personally feel, inspired by something earlier on in the forum... I'm a relative newcomer to forums but I think it should be ok to express such things without being jumped on? Or did I go on too much of a tangent?

Please note too that after listing my old faves I said "I'm always on the lookout for other examples of 'the real thing', so feel free to let me know of any others I haven't discovered yet... :-)". Adam's post made me think Eden may just be such a one. Perhaps next year I'll get to go and find out. It's almost a shame it's not directly before Knockengorroch, then we could go straight from one to the other...

I've responded to Adam with a personal (and happy, shiny, friendly) message.

Hope to see you over a chai, Adam :D

I didn't mean to 'jump on you', more recognise the brilliant work that some people are doing. There is a recurring theme among older festival goers (Im 43 so count myself in that category) on many of these boards that things aint what they used to be, never for the better. What we often fail to recognise is that it's at least as much about us getting older rather than things getting worse. It'll be a sad old world if it comes that we all want the same festival experience (especially if it's an experience defined by grumpy old fellas like me). There's plenty of small, plenty of independent and plenty of good out there :D

I mostly agree with you... though I have to point out that the festivals I listed as being personal favourites and in my experience particularly individualistic are not by any means all similar. From the biggest (Glastonbury) to some of the smallest (Croissant Neuf, Knockengorroch), from very very loud (Beatherder) to almost inaudible (the Croissant), from backed-by-private-cash (Secret Garden) to run-by-struggling-committee-on-a-shoestring (NGG), from pumping dance music (Beatherder) to folk/celtic/acoustic (Knock), from highly hedonistic (SGP) to highly eco and ethical (the Green Gatherings)... So no, I certainly don't advocate or want festivals to be 'all-the-same' ... that's what I'm slightly afraid they will become... but Thanks for your gentler reply and I'll be very interested to see how Eden, Alchemy and next year's Bearded Theory turn out...

Maybe you misunderstood... I wasn't complaining about festivals having stages and stalls... obviously most of them do and stages and stalls are very fine things indeed! (or can be). I was trying to describe a feeling I've had at some newer festivals that the stages, stalls and other features have neither evolved organically nor been chosen/put together with love, creativity, soul, theme or other underlying thread. I don't want to give specific examples as I don't like putting individual festivals under the spotlight unless it's to say 'aren't they great?!' And I totally accept that some of the festivals I don't like other people will love.

Must go off and prepare for Solfest and Knockengorroch now. Sorry, Eden! Didn't mean to use your thread to go so far off on a tangent.
