One for the girl

As there is no Glastonbury this year we are trying to visit at least one other festival and it has to be before end of July so WOMAD is a possibility.

It would be great to hear about it beyond what is on their website. Things such as: Whats the camping like, is it a daily queue to get in? The vibe? Comparisons to Glasto?

Thanks to anyone with the knowledge.

This is my first ever festival, and I think it's fair to say I'm a bit of a girly girl (I'm already planning what to wear each day). I've never been camping, so I don't know how a few things work.

I really am trying not to be such a girl about this festival but I'm confused about a few things.

1) How do you brush your teeth? With a bottle of water I would assume?

2) Make up - is it worth wearing any? Day to day I do wear make up (concealer, foundation, bronzer, blusher, eyeshadow, eyeliner mascara) but I wonder, is better to go au natural even if I don't particularly want to?

3) Clothes - I plan to live in my denim skirt with leggings then a t shirt/vests depending on the weather. I'm guessing a hoody is always a good idea but when is rain will a poncho suffice? Or should I bring a 'proper' coat? Is there any point in bringing flip flops or is is wellies all the way?

4) Is it even possible to shave your legs there or would I just be better off getting waxed beforehand and avoiding it completely?

5) Where do you put your dirty clothes? Is a black bag ok, don't really want to put them back in my bag if they're mucky.

6) Alcohol - when you go into the arena, do people just leave their alcohol in their tent? Will it get stolen?

7) Is it even worth attempting to use the showers? Or are they filthy? I don't know if it's worth the effort when I'll be armed with millions of baby wipes? But at the same time 3 days without a shower is abit frightening

I think that's all I can think of right now, reading it back I sound slightly high maintenance but I'm hoping I'm not the only girl (or boy) who has these same questions?

I appreciate all of your advice!!!!

I made a list for a couple of my friends I'm going to V with. It's just stuff I think are a good idea so people will probably disagree, "it's just, like, my opinion man." Might be useful though...

I've also bought a pair of gas strighteners this year. Think they'll probably be crap but thought I'd give them a go - is only really to keep my fringe under control. Head scarves & dry shampoo will sort it out though  :

Essential list

Tent

Sleeping bag

Sleeping mat / blow up mattress (I have a pump so you don’t need to bring one of those)

Camping chair

Baby/wet wipes

Dry shampoo (I like tropical scented Batiste)

Hand sanitizer (Boots do their own one which is cheap).

Toilet roll

Snack foods & drinks (cereal bars, apples, Ribena… Festival food is expensive so you’ll want your own snack foods for in between!!)

Water bottle/platapus (there should be drinking water taps to fill up from)

Toothbrush

Toothpaste

Hair brush

Hair bands

Small mirror

Deodorant

Waterproof mac (Filthy Fox does a disposable one for 99p)

Wellies

Long socks –for wearing with wellies as they can rub…

Flip flops/sandals

P20 – protects you from sunburn all day

Small sun block stick to carry around

Lip balm with SPF (I like Cherry Carmex or Palmer’s cocoa butter stick)

Sun hat

Warm hat (It can get really cold at night)

Warm gloves

Warm jumper/fleece

Camera (preferably waterproof!)

Fully charged mobile

Small but zipable bag for carrying stuff around when watching bands. Needs to be big enough to carry money, cards, sit mat, rain mac etc and strong enough so that it can withstand crowds.

Large rucksack (think back backing size)for carrying your stuff from the car to the camp site – and then back again. Make sure to have a bin bag inside as a waterproof liner (or those airlock bags from Argos that rolls all the air out – making more room in your bag) for all your stuff… Just in case.

Pair of trainers/shoes to be kept in car so you have something clean to wear home

Sunglasses

Booze – best not to bring glass bottles; if they check your bags they’ll confiscate. I like to bring pre-mixed bottles of coke/lemonade with the poison of my choice already in there.

Bin Bags – For general usage (rubbish, something waterproof to sit on, keep the wellies on) also good as an impromptu rain mac.

Clothes – Is a bit obvious and vague but it’s up to you what you bring: Basics are best though to cover both good & bad weather. So vest & shorts/leggings/skirt and long sleeve top with jeans for cooler weather. Remember the more you bring the more you have to carry… Is also very good idea to keep a set of clothes to one side for the journey home, you don’t want to have to wear dirty stuff back!! Bring at least 2 sets of spare socks and underwear too – just in case. And layers are best for throughout the day… And don’t forget your PJs & bed socks.

Torch – So you can see inside your tent at night and in case you need it to find your way to the toilet… Camp sites should be quite well lit though, I would imagine. The best type to get is the lantern ones which can hang from the top of tent but can be converted to normal torch to carry round if needed.

Optional list

Small cushion (you can buy special blow up ones or little pillows – just to make sleeping more comfortable)

Sit mat for inside the arena area for in-between bands (you don’t want to be hulking your camping chair around – filthy fox does a fold away one for £2.99. We tested them at Blur – not bad!)

Glow sticks / Silly hat / blow up guitar / flag or other fun items – Don’t really have to explain that!! :P

Make-up (waterproof mascara & eye-liner are good ideas)

Make-up remover – I favour simple wipes.

Cooking items – Is up to you whether you bring stuff to cook on. Food on site will be very expensive and quality will vary… If you’re happy to pay £8 for a questionable burger and a small portion of chips then go for it!! Hahaha. I tend to bring:

1. Portable gas cooker

2. Cooking pan

3. Camping kettle

4. Tin cup

5. Plastic plates

6. Plastic cutlery

7. Instant pasta packets & instant cappuccino are on my deffo list.

Vacuum / Roll bags – Ideal for packing your stuff up as reduces the amount of space in your back-pack and is also waterproof. Can be bought from Argos for about £7 for pack of 3.

P-Mates/Shewees – for when you’re caught short or desperately want to avoid the festival loos… I haven’t personally tried them, but it is tempting - it means you can pee like a man!

Perfume/body spray – In case you want to cover the stench, hahaha.

Ipod & portable speakers – I’ve just bought a set of speakers from online. They’ll be crap but at least we’ll have music at the camp site. You may want to bring your own & a MP3 player so you don’t have to listen to my bad taste in music!! I’m also probably going to bring my little shuffle rather than my nice nano because it won’t matter if anything happens to it…

Camping table – I bought one from filthy fox, it folds up/down like a camping chair. Will hopefully make the munching of dinner easier.

Hope this list is of some use!! Have fun. :(

You can always put them in a green bag, or if you're feeling adventurous, a white bag!

Actually seriously it's great that you have asked these sort of questions because I know my girlfriend has exactly the same concerns. She was moaning last night that she wouldn't have her straighteners for 3 whole days and she thinks she looks silly in a hat! I'm trying to convince her that her in a hat will not be the silliest dressed person there!
