But Ben, if you were at Richmond Fontaine, then presumably you only got to see the last half of The Hold Steady. If that? Maybe you just don't get The Hold Steady? Some can't get past the vocal style. Each to his own.

By Sunday night, my appetite for harmony vocals, pedal steel and exotic instruments had been sated. I wanted to jump around and sing along to a rock band, and they delivered 90 minutes of their jumpiest around, singy alongist songs.

Actually, deciding between Richmond Fontaine and The Hold Steady was the hardest decision of the weekend.

1.) EFTERKLANG

2.) DARREN HAYMAN

3.) THE DUKE & THE KING

THE DUKE... isnt really my music, but when we came to the big top it was one of the few shows we saw, where everybody seemed to be watching in awe. efterklang will be big news with their new album. well, darren, he is just one of my favorites anyway...

Top 3 is very difficult, but I think I'll have to go for...

Okkervil River (undoubted top spot; was so much fun)

The Low Anthem

Dirty Projectors

Those last 2 could easily swap with a few others thoug...William Elliott Whitmore, Ohbijou, Fleet Foxes...

If I hadn't seen Explosions In The Sky three times previously I think they'd certainly be in my top 3. They were excellent as always, but having seen every song performed more than once before meant that I took less from it than all the amazing bands I saw for the first time.

Good to hear someone else was disappointed with Magnolia Electric Co. Much preferred Jason Molina solo last year. Guitarist's vocals were way too loud, Molina was bewilderingly quiet (criminal for someone with a voice like his) and generally just a weird selection of songs... would have been nice to hear some of the perkier stuff from Josephine.

Don't agree about Dirty Projectors though, thought they were grand. Nice to hear Knotty Pine especially!

Hard call but...

1) Sparrow and the Workshop

2) The Low Anthem (in the Tipi)

3) Malcolm Middleton

Hadn't heard of Malc, wasn't planning on seeing him but as I sat outside the tea bus enjoying a cream team (pinkie extended as it was proper china) I could hear him from the big top and had to head over. Just a shame I only caught the last 15 minutes.

Just three.......

1) The Low Anthem

2) The Dirty Projectors

3) Efterklang

Big tips of the hat for Steve Earle, Loney Dear, Okkervil River, Shearwater, Spokes, She Keeps Bees, Vetiver, Explosions, Magnolia Electric Co and Neko Case

Incredible festival with an even more incredible spirit running through it
