We had a debate in school about this in English class way back when. I spear headed the anti-uniform side of the argument citing much of what you've already mentioned. I remember one piece of rhetoric I used that being 'this is the rise of a new more cultural form of Mcarthyism'. Yes, I was a c**t then too. Anyway.........

The main point of the opposition, and I'm extremely surprised that this hasn't come up yet especially as teachers are present, was that the uniform restricted the forming of in-group identities and discrimination on the basis of image. Image as a signifier for differences in wealth and indicators of certain styles. I do believe that this is the primary reason still.

You can perhaps then see why I said what I said. I believe that it shelters children by fostering them into a communist environment in which genuine bonds based upon real similarities and differences are broken in a effort motivated by fear and convenience. I got an A + by the way. :) Didn't change the uniform policy though. :)

But then how come our parents did so well? Because they definately had far stricter rules than being told off for having an 'extreme' hair do.

Edit> I've always been a rebel, my mother somehow managed to cage it slightly though :)
