I'm not talking about those who have one or two well-cared for pets. I'm talking about those who 'collect' exotic pets, but whose collection is always transient - the animal is only a part of that collection for as long as it has show-off value to the 'collector'. In my experience, this is always the case with such 'collectors'.

Showing off a pet isn't really an issue - providing that it's a properly cared for pet, and not a temporary and transient 'pet' that soon gets sold on.

I've no idea how worm treats his pets. But I doubt he'd sell on well-loved cats, in the way that most exotic animal 'collectors' soon sell-on animals that are a part of their 'collection'.

Does worm sell on his 'pets', and by doing so prove that they're not really loved pets? You'll have to ask him.

There's twats in all trades. You just have to look at some of the immature shit that gets posted on youtube to see that. Fortunately, many of these aspects of the trade are illegal and you can be fined and imprisoned. The BTS (British Tarantula Society) is good though and many spiders depend upon captive breeding for their survival in the wild.

So you're not talking about worm then. If you have no idea how HE treats his pets why bring up this stupid story about your stupid friend in response to worm getting a spider?

I'm talking about collectors. From what worm has posted - much more than just "getting a spider" - he appears to be a collector.

I don't think he'll be selling his spiders on any more than he would his cats and I think you have been very wrong to make that judgement based on basically f**k dink.

:P

Collectors are generally c**ts, without a care (outside of resale value) for the animals they collect. They're driven by their huge egos.

While you might not make a link and think it's 'f**k dink', your view is not the only one in existence. You think you're allowed your specific presumptions like the one that you've just given, but that others are not allowed more general ones. OK. :P

I like animals more than I like people. My ethics and sensibilities are sound *unlike the resident GP :P *.

As you contantly get to prove, your ethics and sensibilities are only 'sound' for people who have their heads up their arse so can only ever smell shite.

But anyway ....

To keep to the point and the bit you decided not to address, have you ever sold on a living animal that you've owned?

No, I'm not a trader.

Having said that, I may turn to it if my spiderlings turn out to be males, via the BTS of course following the CITES legislation as well as my own ethical sensibilities. But I've not considered it very deeply. For now though, no I haven't and never would if it were my own pet.

Spiders are for life, not just for xmas. :P

Sorry, I should have clarified that I wasn't on about new-borns (tho it looks like you got that anyway) - it's understandable that they might be sold on.

Anyway, glad to hear it. :P

And from bits you've posted, I guess you're aware of the types I'm on about, and don't have any better opinion of them than I do.

My cousin had a bird eater, it made marvelous webs.

For those interested Connie has her bad days and her good days (mostly good though). She is eating pretty well and takes her tablets most of the time without too much of a battle. She caught a mouse the other day so she's obviously not too poorly for now :P

I think you misrepresent the hobby as a whole with the example of the few though.

nah, it's MUCH more than just a few - newsletters full of classified ads of adult animals for sale, because the novelty and show-off value has worn off, so they want something new.

It's not like the people I know of are only trading between themselves.

The worst aspect of it is people trading in wild caught specimens of the endangered kind.

As far as I'm aware none of the people I know have been doing this, but then again I'm not up on which species are protected and which aren't, so it's possible they are.
