The Crooked Vultures

Now don't misunderstand this, I am absolutely not knocking them, I'm just curious

The collective rock credentials of "Them Crooked Vultures" are beyond dispute (QUOTSA, Nirvana, Foos, Zeppelin etc), so I pretty quickly bought the album. Now, don't get me wrong its a good album, but its not an easy album to listen to, pretty esoteric, no real big standout tracks, sing-alongs, anthems, headbangs or whatever.

Normally a new band with new songs would be down the list, but because of who they are, I doubt that TCV will be.

At festivals most of us like to see the bands we know, and hear the songs we know. But TCV are new, they don't have any time treasured tunes yet. So what will they do to win the audience ? For sure there will be tracks from the album which few people will know, but maybe some stuff from their respective bands? Probably not. I don't know, maybe they'll take the view that this is TCV and this is what we do. Maybe the album tracks are a bit more accessible when played live ?

It'll be interesting to see.

.

OK OK OK . . . . I forgot the "M" in Them in the subject Doh :P

I think they'll go down a treat, there might not be much sing along moments, but I don't think QOTSA have many either, and they are leaning more towards that than anything else IMO, also IMO, I think the album is fantastic, I got into it straight away and haven't stopped listening to it for the past couple of months. I absolutely love it.

I think if they're put ion before AC/DC the crowd will be there waiting for them to come on and TCV will win them over.

I watched on Sunday night finally their performance at reading 2009 in the tent live, that I had recorded a while back and it was a quality show, the crowd was full of kids and I was shocked how well recieved they were, if Grohl and Homme wasn't in the band they probably wouldn't have been so well recieved mind. But I think the audience at Download will lap them up.

Ah i was sceptical at first and would have been disapointed if they had got a headlining slot. But for me the album is a grower, especially love 'New Fang' 'Dead End Friends' and 'Reptiles'. They are very upbeat and ideal for a festival as they put u in a party sort of mood...still no headline act tho but will be a great warm up band before ACDC come on...and can really see them doing a Led Zep cover as its a british fest n all! 'babe, im gona leave you', 'ramble on' maybe? would suit TCV tbh....maybe even stairway to heaven?

Saw TCV in hammersmith, they were very good although the venue was way overcrowded. If they played led zep covers that would almost buy my ticket :P

Its a shame that the lineup looks and is rumoured to be quite poor this year. Having read a few posts on here aerosmith(without tyler),van halen, soundgarden, ratm, jay z is nothing to be excited about...

no one listens to van halen anymore, soundgarden compared to audioslave are weak and ratm only have a mention because they conquered a pop chart...yes a POP chart...

Dont get me wrong i love rock , having been to download the last three years but so far sonisphere has alot more going for it in terms of decent live rock acts at this point in time, as does rock am ring

Rock on the range looks like an awesome lineup!

Now im being negative towards the "mighty" download fest ill probably get called a few childish names..meh ill get over it kids:P

Think there's a very large risk of them being a huge atmos killer. Playing below AC/DC should be a band with singalong hits to warm the crowd up. There's a world of difference between playing a 'surprise' mid-afternoon set in a tent and playing 2nd to top, expectations are worlds apart. QOTSA were shockingly dull at Leeds in 08' & that's with songs that the crowd knew.

t8yman-grow up, you can use pictures...wow f**k me! ive posted on this site twice so your definition of a troll is a little off...

its funny how people pick out words and miss the actual point, shouldnt have used the word weak and soundgarden in the same sentence i admit, but my point is audioslave have more accessible hits..and of course RATM are massive! i didnt say they were unheard of ..i said they are only being mentioned at this point in time because of their success in a pop chart! good luck to them!

Ultimately this thread is about TCV, i think they will have to play covers to sway the crowd ,perfect platform for it! :P

Well maybe if u only started listening to rock music in the 'noughties' as thats when audioslave were around. I remember the 90s and Soundgarden had much bigger hits - Black Hole Sun is about 100 times more famous than anything Audioslave ever did. And theres a load of other tracks which were way bigger than any audislave material ie. Rusty Cage which was later covered by Johnny Cash, Spoonman, Outshined and many others. For the majority of Soundgarden fans 'Audioslave' were a massive disapointment after their 1st album - which alone was not in the same class as most Soundgarden records

TCV - I think they will be storming mate, and I am thinking they might pull out a couple of QOTSA or Foo Fighters tunes as well, although they said they won't revist Led Zepp as that's 'Sacred Ground' to them.

The point of TCV is they are experimenting and having fun, while making amazing songs and the idea was to make them sound how they will live! I mean as an out and out rock tune then Mind Eraser, No Chaser is fantastic! In fact TCV and AC/DC is what sold me on Download this year.

As for blatant cross-over potential:

Foo Fighters tunes - Razor (Josh Homme played on)

QOTSA - No One Knows (Dave Grohl played drums on)

Also with Lemmy being there I think there might be a chance of Shake Your Blood (a Probot collaboration between DG and Lemmy)

On topic, not heard the full album yet, but 'Nobody Loves Me and Neither Do I' and 'Caligulove' are awesome songs. I think they'll be good, and they'll be great even if its just for watching Dave Grohl on the drums.

How many people actually have TCV's album? I certainly haven't, and I don't know if I'll bother getting it. When I heard about them I was excited, but they seriously underwhelmed me when I saw them play Jonathan Ross' show (Grohls impression of himself smoking a bong was more entertaining than the song they played, to me!)

Its a very good thing that they're not headliners any more. I reckon Copping had originally had them down as headliners pre-empting their huge popularity, which has yet to materialise.

So why was Copping in contact with them well before the number one? And why did he (apparently) try and get them for previous festivals?
