Best time to go by train?

Last year we travelled down to Glasto by train (from Sheffield) on the Thursday and had an easy time. The last ferry train we had to catch to take us into Castle Carey was virtually empty and when we got there we weren't waiting too long for the coach to take us in.

HOWEVER, when we arrived there was precious little space to pitch up our tents. Thankfully we were working there and Tom's Field had a teeny bit of room for us.

So what's the right balance? I want to have an easy trip down by train this year but i also want to be able to have a decent choice of where to pitch up...

If I were you I would not worry about it. There will always be somewhere for you to camp whatever time you come, you just have less choice. I always get there early when there is masses of space but after a few hours it gets filled up and you end up with very little space in your pitch anyway. All you are looking for is space enough for your tent with an area outside your front door to sit out in, which in my experience is always communal anyways.
