I think it's stupid people saying they are a great live act and are critically acclaimed so they deserve to headline, regardless of whether or not everyone has heard of them. There's a great local band round here called The Brooks who put on an amazing live show and all the local papers rave about them. The rest of the UK I doubt have ever heard of them. Would I suggest that they should be headlining Reading Festival? Of course not, because very few people know who they are or any songs that they've done.

Besides this, I have listened to some Arcade Fire songs and I find them incredibly dull.

It's not like Arcade Fire are some obscure, fringe band. Comparisons to local bands are frankly laughable. Arcade Fire played a sold out UK arena tour, surely that's a measure of mass recognition?

Fair enough if people haven't heard of them but I think that's more an indictment of your own musical knowledge rather than a measurement of the bands popularity.

been listening to Arcade Fire for atleast 5 years, i do find it funny people really dont know who they are, but it's understandable. i dont know half the bands are that appear on the lock-up stage because frankly it's not my kind of music, i'm not all that knowledgable about it. comparing them to local bands is silly, and that sort of rubbish needs hitting on the head very quickly.

AF were second on the bill three years ago. That's a high slot not long ago. Even if you haven't heard them everyone who goes to festivals and considers themselves a music fan should have heard of them, even if it's just by looking at festival line-ups in passing.

I'm not a big fan or really a fan at all - I watched them three years ago and was impressed and have the last two albums but haven't exactly listened to them much. I like AF, will watch them, am sure they'll put on a good show and hope the choice of quality over hype pays off.

and that in itself is not a reason? you on have to read the threads for why people think they should headline - Fantastic live band, 2 critically acclaimed albums with 3rd one due, widely praised within music circles.....

L/R are right to give this band their 1st headlining slot as people have mentioned they were 2nd up main stage 3years ago when touring last and now they are getting headling slot, why is it such a problem to people that this band (a critcally acclaimed amazing live band) have been given what they deserve?

I don't see how. There are a lot of people who aren't familiar with their work. Hows it any different?

I've not yet seen anyone give a convincing reason why Arcade Fire should be headlining Reading and Leeds. Most of the people sticking up for them appear to be big fans.

Really? You don't see the difference.

Unless people are from your area, know the band or happen to be in the pub they're playing at there's no reason that you'd have heard of a local band. They wouldn't have had any airplay, tours, press etc. It's perfectly reasonable to expect that people wouldn't have heard of them.

If a band has released 2 albums, played 2nd from top on the main stage of one of the UK's biggest fesivals, had huge critical acclaim in music press & sold out a UK arena tour playing to 10,000+ people at every venue it's reasonable to expect festival goers to have heard of them.

Do you see the difference between the two?
