The thing is they're not your Radio 1 Indie Pop type of act but none the less they are very popular amongst people who like music, the fact that they're headlining means Radio 1 will take more notice and play more of there music thus putting them out to a wider audience.

They are a very worthy headliner and I personally cannot wait.

AF were second on the bill three years ago. That's a high slot not long ago. Even if you haven't heard them everyone who goes to festivals and considers themselves a music fan should have heard of them, even if it's just by looking at festival line-ups in passing.

Razorlight 2007 2 albums, just for 1.

Richard Ashcroft at V 2000 i think it was had 1 solo album out, but did have 3 verve 1s to go at.

I think the thing is for a lot of people, the sub-headlined at the 2007 Reading/Leeds festivals, but since then, they've kinda disappeared. And they've only released 2 albums. Surely that's gotta be some kind of record for lowest number of albums released before being offered a headlining slot at a huge UK festival?

That implies he/she has a narrow view on music which may not be true, you will probably listen to acts I've never heard of and likewise I probably listen to acts you have never heard of.

Arcade Fire are a biggish act that for the most part aren't very well known.

People not knowing who Arcade Fire are just shows how much R&L has changed, becoming a far more mainstream festival.

I remember The Strokes headlining in 2002 with only 1 album out I think! The Darkness later also with 1 album. I'm not saying I agreed with those headliners but it isn't a new thing offering slots to new bands.

Not that Arcade Fire are a new band!

They have sold out UK and European Arena Tours.

Their album Funeral was in pretty much in every leading music magazines top ten albums of last decade! Making the top 3 in most.

Their second album Neon Bible was also in the Top 20 of most of those lists.

I can't even be bothered to go through the many other reasons they deserve to headline.

Personally as a fan, and to other Arcade Fire fans, do you really want "the masses" to like Arcade Fire.

I will probably get labelled a music snob for this, but I personally like the fact that the radio one listening, and Kerrang reading folk don't know/like them.

Look what happened to Kings of Leon. Be quite happy for them to be watching pendulum and at the lock up stage, while we enjoy one of the best bands and most original live acts of the last 20 years.

(Rant over lol)

Yes I meant in terms of not listening to any music until he/she was 7.

But If I was discussing a band with you that I had never heard of, I would probably listen to it and then come back, But Arcade Fire have been announced for IOW festival and Oxeygen for a few months, had some "popular" tunes out in 2007/2008, played majoy televised music events, As a festival goer I am gobsmakced that somone has not "heard of them" maybe not listened to their music but not heard of them.

R/L can't seem to win really can they?

Book huge mainstream acts like arctic monkeys and KOL and get slated for being un-original

Then book less welll known but generally claimed to be 'better' bands and people complain not enough people know them

Personally the idea's grown on me and I'll bloody excited about seeing them as I think its gonna be something special :P

I'm 17 and love Arcade Fire and have done for several years...but I have to admit my 'oh so indie' friends from college who are going to Reading are definitely guilty of "whos the arcade fire wtf lol", they had no idea but booked their tickets because it's the cool thing to do. They will be 'getting wasted' while watching you-me-at-six and being generally much cooler than everyone else. :P
