To cool box, or not to cool box, that is the question...

Glasto virgin, doing the predictable "what should I bring" thing... Managed to get clothes for a week, tent, sleeping bag, water carrier, sleeping mat, stove, espresso machine, torches, hangover cures, and 2 x litre Sigg bottles for vodka & baileys inside my pack... and for a newbie feel quite pleased with myself, but am now struggling with the question of a coolbox.

Am thinking about getting a Coleman Cool Box, keeps ice frozen for 6 days type, to keep wine and breakfast stuff cool in 'cos I can see me not being arsed to walk a mile for a bacon buttie in the morning (and needing an exceptionally strong espresso to go with it).

So question for the much more experienced - should I bother? Does the convenience of having somewhere cold to keep wine, coffee, milk, bacon and eggs outweigh the effort in dragging it across the field? :P

While it is an awesome cool box and perfect for 'normal' camping trips I would advise against it! Never underestimate the distance you may had to drag all your stuff to your chosen site and also if it's muddy it will be an absolute nightmare! Most of the campsites have a breakie van or some such within about 2-5 mins walk so you'll not struggle to get something to eat?

Also if you freeze a couple of packets of bacon/sausages etc they should last the weekend! Tip for keeping your drink cold is to keep it under your ground sheet, it works we tried it last year! Or freeze your mixers if your taking spirits?

There is also the issue that, althought I hate to say it, the cooler is 70 quid and that is a lot of money to spend for you to come back to your tent and it's been nabbed, drink, food and all? People were getting their sack trolleys nicked last year?

Milk-wise, we were camped at hitchin hill last year and the milk van came round every morning so you'll not be short of fresh milk for your coffee either!!

Hope this helps and has a fab first glasto, it'll change your life forever!! :P

Gotta ask, being a soft southerner, but what is a scottish breakfast?

Jodi / Norain... cheers for your posts as well - Am now thinking I might travel very light on the basis that it's my first time, and if I still think I should have bought one at the end of it I can bring one for next year instead :P

I definitely think the cool box idea is such a benefit for Glasto...I have been taking one for the last 5 years and it has never disappointed...ours is a technological feast in that I have modernised it to be covered in space blankets on the outside and inside.

Get quite a big one and freeze like 3 or 4 cartons of juice, 2 on the bottom and then two on the top with all your drink/food in between. Put all your drink and food into a fridge and set to lowest setting withoiut them freezing up to a week before the festival. We honestly still had cold beers on Monday morning last year and the juice had started to thaw enough to use with any spirit you like.

This year we are going to get a trolley though as lugging it with everything else is a pain although there is no rush and we often take a break every 20mins or so with a beer and then carry on our merry way.

I am definitely for taking it...although you dont need to get a top of the range cool box, anything that is sealable and fits enough supplies in as necssary works just as well as long as you set it up so that it keeps the cold in and the heat out...another option is to soak a towel and put it over the entire coolbox.

I take a wheeled cool box to glastonbury every year and now would not be without it. Mine is a bit smaller then the one in the thread and has a retractable handle, and it handley doubles as a tab, with little indents to hold a cup of vodka and redbull :P

I use frozen capri suns instead of ice blocks. And freeze everything else I can. Yeah it can be a pain to take in but it is worth it. Also useful for taking stuff back out, for me anyway I need the extra space because I never manage to pack as well on the return lol

What sort of ice do these use? Is it the traditional camping ice packs. The blue rectangular plastic things you stick in a freezer and they gradually thaw out or something else?
