Big Tents

Hi there

This is going to be my 2nd Glasto and there is 9 of us in our group and we all intend to kip in tent seen below. We bought a 9 man tent off ebay for a good price. I am wondering what are peoples feelings about large tents at Glasto? We arent the sort of group that will tape off an area and are very welcoming to all. Also anyone who has taken a tent this size before, do you need to get there early and where would you suggest camping?

Quite simply...its a music festival and you have to camp. If there's lots of you and you can carry and pitch a monster, do it. 175,000 people...some will piss others off with the size of their tent...thousands of others wont. Simples.

There was 8 folk in my group last year all staying in a big 12 man tent similar to the one you posted. We managed to get it pitched up in Kidney Mead OK but it was early in the morning and filled up fast there after. 7 of us slept in the bedroom areas with all our stuff whilst one (ampersand) crashed in the main living space. Just kept all our booze and munchies along the sides of the living area so there was still loads of room to move around in.

Our neighbours didn't seem to mind it too much either and a few of them even mentioned that they used our tent a reference to find their tents from the nearby path. Also, when it rained we managed to cram 22 folk in the living area and shared some banter and drinks with our neighbours- good times! :P

While it's good to have somewhere to shelter as a group when it's raining, I personally would prefer to sleep in the privacy of my own tent.

Also, it's easier for 8 people to carry 8 2-man tents than it is for 8 people to carry one 10 man tent.

Also, it's easier to find 8 2-man tent sized flat area, than it is to find one 8-man tent sized flat area.

I know this having been forced to pitch an 8 man tent in what was basically a hole. Lucky it didn't rain.

I am getting a bit stressed about big tents. There is just the two of us now but I am borrowing a family tent that will sleep 6. I feel really guilty but I just cant afford to turn down the offer of a free tent.

So I am apologising in advance and promise i wont hog any prime space.

We used to take what was sold as 12 man tent - four 'triple' bedrooms between just four of us so we had one bedroom each but also a large communal area in the central dome for cooking/chilling/enetertaining. Never felt guilty about it as we squeezed in with our friends in an encampment at the top of Big Ground and overall took up not much more space than a clutch of smaller tents.

The only drawbacks were the weight (we needed a decent four wheeled trolley) and the time it took to put up (three people for half an hour). But it was worth it for a decent night's sleep and the social side (we could sit 12 in the main dome).

We have been taking our 12 man "Scouser Tent 2 " for years now , its just for sitting and smoking

and chilling in.

If we set it up right we can watch the pyramid screens from it !

We have never had any adverse comments about it , in fact lots of people comment on how friendly

and relaxed it is.

All of us sleep in small 2 man tents so I guess its swings and roundabouts !

:P
