I've just brought a Canon EOS450D with the standard 18-55mm lens and DSLR photography is all new to me.

What lens would you suggest is the best to buy (within an affordable budget) to get decent festival photographs?

I will be taking my Nikon D60 this year. Will get a few spare batteries soon. eBay ok? I have a couple of lenses to play with. i studied portraits a long time ago, and just getting back into it.

Pictures are here, but none of Glasto. Well, some from Jan when I went to look around. Please be kind though, I am new to this lark.

Firstly big thanks to George, looks like a good topic you've started here.

The lockups are your friend, never keep gear in your tent or vehicle, far too easily gone, I'm always more than happy to contribute a few extra quid over the course of the festival, as the people running the lock ups do a great job and are usually great crack as you get to know them over the 5/6 days.

I'll be looking to arrive early doors on the Weds, as travelling down from the North East to Bristol on the Tues, so anytime from wed pm onwards would suit me for a meet up and a few drinks, sounds cool.

The lens question does really depend on what you're trying to capture. Performers on either main or other stage I would say a zoon with a long end of 300 at least, on the Park stage if you can get down the front, your kit lens would do fine job during the day.

Look forward to meeting everybody soon

Ian

Well regards choice of lenses, If you intend to take stage shots you need a long lens, and due to the crowds ( and not having a press pass this year ) it will be very difficult to get a decent shot with out a 300 mm. If you are after portraits that will be great too cos you can get some very good candid shots from a distance with out interfering in the action.

What i usually have in my bag is a 70 200 f2.8, 24 70 f2.8, 50 f1.4 and a 10 20 which is great for crowed shots

This is a link to some photos I had taken last year at isle of MTV Malta, which is held the month after Glasto. Lets see who we will have this year as the line up is still a mystery.

Good morning to all of you. As I mark the days on my calendar I just cant keep my self form looking forward to the opening of Glasto 2010. I have a feeling that its going to be a great one (if the planes will work). So in the mean time I sat down in front of my computer and go my self to work some black & whites, sorry for all those that love colour.

I would really appreciate and comments no matter how harsh and honest they are.

This is just a teaser of what you will find in todays blog

Morning George,

Likewise I'm counting down the days.

Really enjoyed them, in fact for me, the best set you've posted to date.

I think your b/w conversion is excellent, but then I personally prefer high contrast and on the last one it's almost got a hdr look as well.

You're certainly inspiring me to look back over my shots from last year and I'll try and find a few more to post myself over the next couple of days.

Cheers

Ian

I am a Canon guy but I love the low noise from the Nikon. On thing I believe is that no matter what camera you get its the lenses that make the biggest difference. If you get a good camera and remain with the kit lens provided don't expect top results, especially in low light conditions. What are you aiming to photograph? Are you after the stage performers or the festival life?

I'm gonna be bringing my (shiny new) 500D this year :P

Got some piccies from 2008 here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fionchadd/set...57606071221988/ but they're unsorted/processed and not all that great! gonna try and take more 'proper' photos this year, especially now I've got a better camera.
