Queues For Car Park And Festival Entrance

This is my first time to Glastonbury and I'm a bit worried about the traffic, the queues how long it will take to park my car, get into the festival and tent up. (Mainly because I want to be there in time to catch the England match)

If I was to arrive at the site by about 11:00 am on Wednesday would I be done in time to catch the football at the pyramind stage, or does it just take forever?

you should get there as early as you possibly can to avoid any possible trafic problems...

the last 3 years we have left Merseyside at 1am Wed morn, we took our time driving down, stopped a couple of times on the way for loo breaks & hot drinks, arrived Glastonbury between 6-7am, had breakfast in the local Tesco, then got on site for gates opening around 8am...

got parked, unpacked the car, joined the Q at the gates & got camped by 10am :P

this year (as the car parks are opening Tuesday night 9pm) we will be travelling down Tues night, maybe get there about 3-4am, which will allow us a few hours rest before gates open at 8am...

i'm assuming the camper van car parks are opening Tues nite 9pm too ? anyone know for sure ?

Im not going down the night before and sleeping in my car. Me and the girlfriend will be leaving Milton Keynes area about 2/3am. Last year I was stuck in traffic for 9 hours with a snapped handbrake cable, not fun at all.. especially with all them hills! We left about 6am and got tented up about midnight.

I think it's crucial that you bear in mind that the traffic last year was unprecedented due to traffic accidents on two major routes (M5 and another I don't recall). This clogged up traffic on all the A and B roads that led to gridlock.

I've never known it be like that previously.

In answer to the first poster, if you get to the carparks for 11am then you have every chance of making the England game although I would probably aim for 10am just to be sure. If there is a repeat of last year's traffic chaos then nothing you do can guarantee you making it short of setting off at 2am. Or catching t'bus.

very unpredictable

2008: left London at 6am Thursday, got to site about 9 and was with mates and pitched up by 10.

2009: left London at 7am Wednesday, go to site around 11 and was all set by about 1 (I think I just avoided the road chaos last year by the skin of my teeth!)

this year I am driving to a mates house in Frome on Tuesday night, and will head to site at around 6am.

Obviously they have the car parks opening on Tuesday which may alleviate it slightly but if, by arriving on site about 11am you mean - planning on getting to Glastonbury for 11 I'd say you'd have very little chance of making the England game.

Last year we "arrived" at 12 noon. By arrived I mean, we joined the back of the queue of cars waiting to get into the car parks. It took us 10 hours to get from the back of the queue to the car park - and a further one hour to get unloaded, onto the site and to find out friends. Then however long it takes you to put up your tent as well.

Needless to say, our Wednesday was written off. We left at 6:30 am and we didn't arrive on site until 11pm - and we only live in Leicestershire!

I'm determined to be on site Wednesday morning this year - so I've ordered a 2/3 am start, just to be on the safe side. If you're really bothered (like me) about the game I recommended making absolutely sure that you'll be on site early - then you can always get some sleep between about 10am-1pm if you get set up early and you'll have the worry of getting stuck in traffic off your mind! :P

OP, the chances are you should be perfectly fine if you get to the car parks for about 11am (though I'd aim for earlier if you can). The traffic is unlikely to be as bad as last year - I'd never known it so bad & have been going since 1995 - but obviously things can & do go wrong.

So if you are really worried about missing the match I'm afraid that the only way to be sure of seeing it is to not head to Glastonbury until the match has finished!! :P

I am sleeping at a B&B in Glastonbury this year to avoid the drama (if it happens again) the 11 hours in a car almost killed my spirit last year. If we weren't doing this I would probably leave around 4am to be on the safeside.
