Cooking or buying food

Hi this is my first festival im 17 and i'm going with a couple of friends, but were unsure as to cook or buy food, we'll obviously just take food with us in the evening but in the morning and during lunch, is the food nice and what are the sought of prices. Is it worth it to take food or should we just take a knock of camping stove and a bit of food? thanks

Lots and lots of threads on here on this subject!

The variety of food on offer is amazing. Anything from shite burgers from shite burger vans to gourmet food in a cafe/restaurant setting. Best to budget at least a fiver for a main meal. Some people take lots of their own food, some don't take any. It's personal preference and the size of your budget that determines which you want to be.

Budget on £6.00 per meal bought. I personally have never cooked whilst camping. To save your money perhaps you could bring cereal or cereal bars and some fruit for breakfast, milk is available on-site. The food is in general lovely, just avoid most outlets near the larger stages.

Have a great time! :P

Just remember you have to carry it!

Stove, kettle, cups, coffee/tea & pot noodles, if you are taking rucksacks. more if you have trollies.

But as above, you will never find a larger selection of food anywhere else, would suggest more like £6.50 for main meal.

Food is available round the clock. So, again, as above, it's up to you what you want to spend or carry!

Enjoy the experience!

Me and a couple of mates were in the same situation as you guys last year.

We ended up taking way too much food and it was such a pain to carry and in the end we hardly ate much of it due to the temptation of Burgers etc around site.

This year im taking a few breakfast bars for when i wake up, and bottle of water or two to have on the way down. (Obviously some alchol) and then buying everything else over the days im there. Such a better way about it i think.

£200 will easily be enough to eat well from the stalls. Especially if you're not buying beer from the bars.

The only food I take with me is a bag of crunchy oat cereal, to nibble, dry, when I'm hungry in the tent but can't be arsed to move.

Yep £6.50 / meal will sort you out fine.

The only food I take with me is some muffins for my breakfast every morning.

Was wondering about taking a kettle this year, as I do NEED a cuppa tea in the morning, and £1.80 - £2.50 for a cuppa chokes me a bit!

If you can be motivated to cook, it would be worth bringing a small stove, a bag of pasta and some sort of sauce for it. Easy to make, full of carbs and very filling. For your £6.50 on the stalls, you will often still feel hungry (although not doubting the quality of some of the food available). If you bang up a large bowl of pasta for breakfast or lunch then get "takeaway" laters.

I haven't ever cooked there before but I think I might given the current economic climate i.e. I am skint as f**k.

If you take food to cook, obviously it's lots cheaper but the downside is you have to carry it all in & spend more time at your tent.....

If you buy food, you get to experience all the yummy food Glastonbury has to offer (and believe me that's a lot - I tend to eat my way round it! :P ) but it does cost more....

It's swings and roundabouts I suppose!

I'm going down the food route. My plan is to take all my stuff to the campsite then head back to the car for all the food etc.. long winded but got FA else to do on the first day and I really don't mind walking.

Will take a stove along with tinned foods (beans, soup etc..) and lots of cereal and cereal bars, crisps, sweets. Can buy bread on site I do believe and also milk. Might get some sausages, bacon just for the first night/morning. I tend to eat loads in the morning, so will eat well at my campsite in the morning then head out and maybe buy one proper meal a day onsite.

I do think the prices for food is an utter pisstake though, which is the main reason I bring my own. All festivals are like this though. It also wouldn't take an awful lot of effort to get a supermarket marquee up for the weekend. Seen it before in places and they're great. But suppose the stalls would be out of business that way!

Don't see any point taking food along... I like to travel little as most, only bulky thing I'll be taking is some boxed cider

i'll take some nibbles couple packs of nuts, tube of pringles etc nothing too heavy

Call us organised but we rustle up a selection of meals in the week leading up to the festival...e.g Chilli/spag bol/chicken with mushrooms etc etc. Once it has cooked, chuck it in the freezer for a good amount of time before leaving.

On the morning of leaving for Glasto, pull out the frozen stuff and bung it in a cool box with a couple of frozen cartons of say orange juice or such like and also put in all your beer/alcohol that needs keeping cold...the frozen food keeps this stuff very cold (in our experience until the Sunday) and when the food has thawed, you can chuck it into a pan and re-heat it.

Chuck in some bread and a couple of tins of beans and hey presto - beans on toast.

Works a treat and cuts down on the dollar.

My option is a little of both. I tend to take a couple of disposable BBQ's and associated food along for a right old slap up on the Wednesday afternoon/evening, proper home marinated chicken, homemade kebabs etc. Hopefully I get a couple of sausages and buns left over for brekkie on Thursday and Friday mornings.

Also normally take a couple of pot noodles to have each day before I leave my tent as I'm normally out for the day once I do get my arse in gear.

Then it's picking up whatever takes my fancy on the move.

Also I'm a wee lad who barely eats much at the best of times and when I'm at a festival the need for masses of food just evades me. On the plus side that means only the very, very occasional need to visit the long drop. Think I only needed to go once last year...oh, sorry to put you off your food :P

The only food we take down are to make fried egg rolls for the gang in the morning. Past 2 years we've taken fresh fruit down as well, a must for the morning. We also discovered these self heating meals a few years back:

http://www.heatermeals.co.uk/

Which proved very popular and came in handy at 3am and you don't one of the crap-burgers on offer. Also, it's quite fun watching it heat up, pop and sizzle almost like it's going to explode :-) I'd also suggest finding a decent breakfast bar (Lulu's was good), there really is no better cure for a hangover and setting yourself up for the day than a massive fry up.

However, remember that the more food you take the less beer you can carry!
