You're wrong. My girlfriend's PC had both Norton and AVG installed, Java updates were turned on. It was still 0wned by this trojan.

You don't need to take blame or make excuses, just post an announcement helping people protect themselves and recover their losses. Your pride is worth less than your community, wind your f**king neck in for everyone's sake.

It's rather amusing that, despite this forum getting a small proportion of the forum traffic, it's the only festie forum where people have felt the need to keep on moaning about something I could have done nothing to stop.

For once, the Reading/Leed-ers are proving themselves much more mature. :P:P

I don't think you have done neither yourself nor the credibility of your website any favours by reacting in this way Neil. It would have been much simpler to sticky a thread explaining the problem, how the problem was the fault of hackers and not due to your incompetence and then kindly listed some advice and solutions to the aforementioned problem. Instead you have seemingly acted like a petulant child, laying the blame at the feet of your users for not having up to date AV software.

At the end of the day a reputable website that is dependent on user loyalty such as efests should at least offer its users informative advice regarding the hack. If you want a classic example of how a serious website deals with such situations have a look at Microsoft and Google’s response to the supposed, Chinese, hacking scandal.

A simply AV freeware package will not protect you against all types of malware, spyware and viruses. A lot of internet users whom you rely upon for the success of your website are unaware of this and whether or not you think such ignorance renders you completely blameless, a bit of humility would have at least helped to restore some user trust.

It is great to see some genuine passion expressed in a thread again. It has been a long time. Internet security is a bitch. It requires 24hr a day vigilance. I too have been a victim of hacking episodes and I have eaten humble pie and apologised to the users, even though my only crime was having a life which meant that I didn't do the 24hr a day monitoring thing. Seriously, if you are trying to single handedly defend a website against all threats you would not have a life. This fake AV ransomware that is involved here is inconvenient, but FFS no one died! If I was webmaster here I WOULD have apologised but I also have a nagging respect for this webmaster here who said f**k you, I've done nothing wrong.

BTW I run Linux as my desktop and all this would have been a non-issue if more of you understood that Open Source software is far easier to fix than Proprietary shit. This would have been far worse and seriously expensive if this site ran on IIS

This is the sound of a nail being hit squarely on the head.

Perhaps it is.

And if I hadn't been

1. stopping the problem, and then thoroughly checking that I had stopped the problem...

2. answering lots of moronic posts & emails from over-sensitive little souls who can never have any responsibility for their own actions and always have someone to blame for their own lack of thought &/or action (which *IS* a part of this)....

3. spending £500 that I don't have looking into the unhelpful bollox that triton posted just for the purposes of unnecessarily scaring you all some more by suggesting what he's found will rape your mother yet he's happy to have your mother raped for two more days....

... then perhaps I'd have had the time to address things in a more overly comprehensive and sensible way. Instead I've had my head put on a stick because I've been the victim of the same crime as the rest of those non-thinking morons who expect better from me than they've managed themselves.

Ultimately, I've now hit the point where I'll happily say....

If you don't like this site and how it's run, just f**k off. You are not wanted here.

I no longer give a f**k what the wo-is-me brigade think, or what the effect is on efests. I very nearly pulled the plug on the whole thing yesterday and having had 12 hours to think it over properly have no qualms about doing just that. While there's some lovely people that use this site, they're being overwhelmed by the morons, and I ain't ever been here for moron relief.

Go or stay, I really don't care. But if you're one of those that really should be going, don't expect anything but truth from my gob from now on. Can you handle the truth? Nope - today has shown that you can't. Run on back to mummy.

The subject is now closed. I have a big 'ban' button to use for anyone that fails to grasp this.
