JimOfTheJungle
My guess as to why some have been infected and others not, really isn't a case of my antivirus is better than your antivirus. As has been seen the same products have stopped it for one person, let it through for another. There have been quite a few who have been caught, with up to date AV, myself included. Its much more likely that the different versions of various bits of software, in this case adobe it would seem, have rendered some computers much more liable than others. Would be nice if those sitting smugly weren't quite so gloaty. Its my guess they've simply been lucky!

eFestivals
Its my guess they've simply been lucky! Or that they have more effective AV software. Not all AV software is the same. It's certainly the case that many of the free ones are less effective at dealing with virus' than other software, whatever the claims for those free offerings. eFestivals
it was disappointing the problem with the site lasted so long. Just four people sent an email about it. No one phoned about it. Just like everyone else, efestivals staff have days off. However, the telephone is always monitored. There is no psychic channel that informs me of an issue. eFestivals
f**kin' hell Neil... call me old fashioned, but a vague apology wouldn't go amiss, instead of just being on the defensive. My definitions were up to date I'm not talking grovelling here, just an acknowledgement that your site has caused some people some problems I personally, as well as eFestivals staff, had nothing to do with the problems happening. You are saying nothing different to someone that has been burgled having to apologise for being burgled. Yet you wouldn't expect a burglary victim to apologise for being burgled, would you? It's unfortunate that it's happened. It was nothing within my control.
eFestivals
Perhaps. Although people with branded paid for AV have come a cropper too! And people with free software have reported it being stopped. Yep. Which just goes to demonstrate that not all AV software is the same.
ralph250
... I'm at work now, and can't 'digest' all that yet... can all that be done off-line? Edited May 4, 2010 by ralph250

JimOfTheJungle
If I had something of yours, and I got burgled, and your 'thing' got nicked, while I might not feel responsible, I think I'd be a little humble and even apologetic.. never mind though, eh... onward and upward
TazOnSpeed
Right! My version of avg free, which is up to date is different to the up to date avg free that a fair few other efests users have reported as stopping this then? Oh. No. It. Isn't. Your not half stubborn and defensive to the nth degree man!

eFestivals
I am concur with this 100%. I known I am not alone in saying that Neil is not exactly a "people" person, this is a new low. Neil it was your site, possibly though a third party, still your site, that infected people's computers and just to say, tough you should have anti-virus software like me, is not really good enough. I say this as someone completely unaffected by the issue, I run "rubbish" free anti-virus software and flashblock was plenty of protection as it turned out. A little humility on this one may even gain you some respect! I'm sorry that there's scumbags in the world. There you go - I've apologised for every action of every scumbag from the big bang to the end of eternity. The murder of JFK wasn't within my control either, but I apologise for that too. eFestivals
Basically, this. Perfect metaphor. Efests, just a question, do you think you'd sell a few more hoodies etc if you were a litte nicer? I really don't care. If someone is so shallow to buy because of a smile instead of because a product is worth buying then I couldn't much care for their business. eFestivals
But surely if the virus was contained in an ad on your site, then it's your responsibility to ensure all ads are safe? The virus was caused by a hack attack, and nothing else. Short of every hacker and script kiddie being shot, there is zero that any website can do to stop such things. eFestivals
There is nothing I could add, I honestly could not have put it better myself, you have completely made my point for me. No need to respond again, unless you want to dig yourself a bigger hole of course. If I've been amiss with something here (which I haven't), then exactly the same applies with your own PC where you haven't taken every measure possible to stop such things happening (because: my AV software stopped my PC becoming infected, it told me that it had). eFestivals
Ok read it this way. I own an efests hoodie from your site. Its old and knackered. I'm not buying another though because I dont want people to associate me with the grumpy bugger that runs this site. Statement of fact. That's fine. It's your choice, a choice I accept your right to have. I have freely available choices too. I could choose to block your access here, so that as well as not being associated with this site via your choice you're not associated with it by my choice too. Just as well the world is not full of people as grumpy as you, eh? Yep, not even me.

JimOfTheJungle
Efests policeman knocks at the door- "Hello madam, your sons been killed in a car crash. I'm not saying i'm sorry or anything, cos, like it weren't my fault was it"
