How does EotR compare to Green Man?

Hi Everyone,

I've never been to EotR before and my favourite small festival is Green Man. I would love to hear from people who have been to both fests and can compare and contrast the two for me.

I actually prefer the line-up at EotR, but Green Man is beautiful and there is so much more going on besides the music.

What is EotR like aside from the music? What's the food like, the bars etc, and the stuff to do when not watching bands?

Would love to hear your thoughts. I like Green Man because it is relaxing and chilled and you can just while away the days wandering around and looking at stuff, and there is lots of fab food. What about EotR?

Ta :-)

Ok so I haven't been to Green Man, but my impression is that it's like EOTR only bigger, with some stunning scenery but no peacocks. I would like to go some time, although it does feel like it would be so much like EOTR, and pretty close to it time-wise too, that it might be a bit weird going to both in the same year (I'm not planning to ever miss EOTR).

Having read Jarvis Hammond's A Year Of Festivals, in which he went to 13 festivals in 2007 including Green Man and EOTR, my impression was he liked the vibe of Green Man, but EOTR was one of his favourites out of all the festivals - and that includes the likes of Glastonbury, Latitude and Roskilde.

Btw if you can get a hold of it, it's a great read, and he's a friendly chap too.

Might I also add on the "more than music" front, there's a comedy venue, which I've never managed to get into yet cos it's always rammed, there's lots of other interesting chilled-out distractions like Scrabble Sunday on the peacock lawn, Ringo music bingo etc, and the woods are just fantastic with the book tree, the fairy lights and the random disco dancefloor and best of all, the piano stage - half a room in the middle of a clearing, where bands will randomly pitch up to play.

One of the best things about EOTR is the way the bands are happy to wander round among the punters, stop and chat etc, something I've never experienced at any other festival. You get the impression that bands really enjoy hanging out at EOTR rather than just being there to play a gig.

Greenman and Eotr are by far my 2 favourite festivals and to choose between them is very difficult.Every time i come back from Greenman i think yep that's definitely my fave festival only to think that about Eotr a month later! 2 great festivals that have their own thing going on that's why i try and do both every year!

I did both for the first time last year, and they were probably my two favourite festival experiences (admittedly, the weather was brilliant at both).

The line-ups speak for themselves, really. Green Man seems to have a bigger budget. This doesn't mean a big gap in quality, but the headliners are more Zeitgeist-y. I'd guess that Joanna Newsom and Flaming Lips were a bit more expensive to book right now than the EotR offerings, anyway.

Both settings are special. Provided the conditions are good (probably cold at night at EotR, quite possibly rainy at Green Man), Green Man is more majestic, End of the Road more intimate. It's a choice between mountains and streams or gardens and peacocks. Spoilt for choice!

EotR doesn't have the same variety of food and other things to do, but that's to be expected from a significantly smaller fest (5000 vs. 15000 or something now?). In fact, EotR is considerably better than that ratio suggests...

In sum: both are really chilled out, both have good facilities, both have great line-ups, both have great settings. Only one has mountains, only one has peacocks. My preference is *just* for Green Man, but you won't get me complaining at the EotR loadsamates camp. Can't wait.

Green Man is stunning BUT rain is almost ever present other than last year.

Both GM & EOTR are brilliant festivals although I reckon EOTR has the edge this year with a better line up

Green Man was immense except for a very dull and dour Doves set on Friday.

Cool shiney happy music lovers attend both.

GM = 12000 peeps

ER = 5000

Both beautiful and chilled locations

ENJOY!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the replies, folks.

I thought I'd resurrect my original thread because we're off to EotR tomorrow!

We couldn't resist going to Green Man too, and although it was probably the wettest festival I have ever been to (although Glasto '98 is now nothing but a painful memory), we had a good time - I'm in love with Green Man, I think.

And then last weekend we were at Electric Picnic - good line-up, but a bit corporate in parts (booze is completely dominated by Heineken, and there wasn't even any cider!). EP is fun but also has a touch of the scumbag factor in certain camping areas (tent thefts, muggings etc) so I'm looking forward to what I expect will be a totally different vibe tomorrow.

Just hoping we get there in time for Mark and Isobel (I know that should really be Isobel and Mark, but sod it - I am a longstanding Lanegan fan).
