yup, anyone with the best player in the world, and the scorer of the winning goals in serie a and the champions league final, have to be in with a decent chance.

like england, i don't expect them to win, but my jaw wouldn;t be on the floor if they did.

fair points

but the conditions down there at the moment are hardly unusual for the europeans this time. its a few degrees cooler than here, not much humidity. as long as the european teams acclimatise right i cant see the venues being as bigger issue as normal

those sorts of factors have applied at other non-euro WC's, but hasn't seen a euro team win.

If you think about it, Brazil play the majority of their games away from Brazil, and that's something that applies to few other countries (perhaps other South American ones, I dunno). So they're used to travelling, while the likes of England see getting a result at home as the most important factor for any series of matches they play - perhaps it's this that makes the difference.

(Yes, I am aware that Brazil doing that is a more recent thing - but they have sill always had to travel to find decent opposition, while Euro teams never have).

and, mad as it sounds to me as i type it, i dont think the brazilians are that great at the moment (i know) leaving it open for anyone

They weren't thought as a great Brazilian team in 1994. Or 2002.

While I get where you're coming from, they're the team that just can't be written off for anything.

I was alluding to Neil's suspect knowledge of things to do with football that aren't shown on MOTD on a Saturday night

Just looking at the squad numbers, i would not be surprised or unhappy if the 1 to 11 was our starting lineup

1 James

2 Johnson, 3 Ashley Cole, 5 Ferdinand, 6 Terry

7 Lennon, 4 Gerrard, 8 Lampard, 11 Joe Cole

9 Crouch, 10 Rooney

I think it's pretty damned obvious that they are - if they were his "first choice 11", then Barry would have a number 11 or lower, but as we know that Barry won't be fit for the first game, it's got to be who he plans to field.

The one other that might have been expected to be in the starting 11 is Heskey, but just as with Barry it's very easy to see why he's chosen someone else.

It's the team I'd expect us to play against the USA.

Not at all surprising given that the USA's centre backs marked Torres and Villa out of last year's Confederations Cup, Green is average and Barry is injured.

I'm not saying we're right to take them lightly, but if we beat the USA I think he'll play most of the other players against Slovenia and Algeria.
