Faulty Tent - what are my rights?

This is sort of related to Glasto so bear with me.

Does anyone know anything about my consumer rights in this situation?

I had a tent bought for me in January 2010 for a present, which I've put up this weekend as a Glasto practice session - only to realise that there's several hooks missing where you attach the inner tent to the outer tent - making it pretty much unuseable.

I've called the place it was ordered from, & they've told me to take it into my nearest shop for analysis.

But my question is this - the tent was in the sale at £70 reduced from £140. So do they have to give me a replacement tent to the value of £70, or a replacement tent of a similar size / specification? Obviously we're coming into prime festival season now so I'm unlikely to get such a good deal again, and want to be able to state my case with confidence when I go into the shop later on! I know they won't be able to offer me a direct like-for-like replacement as they don't sell this tent any more.

sorry another question. somebody fell into my tent on saturday and three of the hooks are missing (it's a tent where the poles go onto the outer sheet, and the inner sheet hooks on)

can you buy these from millets or does anyone have a free alternative?

I'll ask when I'm in there as these hooks are also completely missing off my joke of a tent as well!

The main one I was worried about was the one that hooks the top of the inner tent to the outer fly - unfortunately being quite tall it hangs so low, it's like wearing a hoodie even when sitting up in the sleeping bit!

Due to the time lapse, in law you may be considered to have accepted the goods, they might only offer to repair/replace rather than refund. Since they can't replace it, they may offer a refund (which is what happened to me).

Good luck!

Thank you for all your replies!

Well good news - I took it back to my local store (can't name them as they did me a real big favour, and I don't want to get them in trouble!), they said initially that I would have to go to Luton or Bedford where they had stock of the same tent, which is a good hour's drive from here, or they could initiate a store transfer (which could take 5 weeks - too big a risk), or I could have £70 on a gift card.

None of these options were ideal as I couldn't then buy a tent for £70 which would sleep 4, so they went & had a rummage in the store room & gave me a Vango Venture 500, and put it through the till as a price-match (saved me £50)! So I had to pay no more money which was so nice of them, and I think I've ended up with a far better tent!

I'm well happy & raring to go!

I asked about the hooks & they said they didn't sell them there - sorry Ampersand!

The time lapse shouldn't make a difference - certainly you should be good for 12 months, the guidelines say that any item you buy should be "fit for purpose" for up to 6 years. As radish said, you'll get either a replacement, what you paid for it (if you have a receipt) or the last / current selling price of the item.
