pop up tents ?

Borrowed one of these last year. They are quick and easy to put up, but difficult to dismantle as you have to curve the frame inward whilst it is trying to pop out again. When packed away, ours was a large disc of at least 1m diameter which was awkward to carry. Good for slotting into narrow gaps on trains, coaches etc.

Once you've learned the knack for folding it away, it's actually quite easy. If you don't know the knack you can literally spend hours fighting the b*stard and still not get it properly stowed. Have a look at >

video off youtube - it's about as clear as any.

As for keeping the rain out - any tent should be watertight if you put it up properly and don't allow anything inside the tent to lean up against the walls. If you get a cheap and nasty single-skin tent, it will be made of a non-permeable material so you'll have condensation dripping on you by the morning.

Personally, I don't think the few minutes effort saved when putting them up makes up for their unwieldiness. A more traditional tent stows into a much more compact pack which you can carry much more easily. More traditional tents also tend to have more room and don't wobble round in the wind so badly.

Get to decathlon (or go online) and get a quechua one. They are the mutt's nuts. Easy to set up and put away (practice in the garden) and they won't let a drop of rain in. Might not be as cheap as ones from Argos etc, but this Glastonbury will be mine's 8th festival and its still going loud and proud

We had a pop-up tent last year and leaked really badly - that being said we are unsure what caused it - the rain or if someone left the door open???? Our friend is going this year and she has bought a double skin pop-up which looks fantastic - although do not expect to get a double airbed in it barely fits a single.

I used an outwell jersey for 2007 and it was fine for one person. Worth its weight in gold packing monday morning in the rain, once you get the knack of it you can get them down in no time.

They are too small for more than one tho and the lack of a porch can be annoying with muddy wellies

For 1 they are fine, but two they are awful! Have not 'porch' space, so no wear to kick off muddy boots and leave bits outside the body of the tent. Forecast is rainable at mo, so you will want somewhere to leave damp bits.

Plus they are large even when folded, and not particularly light compared to a standard larger two man tent.

Well there you are then - I am taking what is sold as a three man dome tent, just for me. Would be a really push to get two people in it with stuff!

But that only weighs 2kg - £15 from tesco :)

The key thing, with tents, is to buy slightly larger than the spec.

'2 man' = ok for one

'3 man' = ok for two

etc etc

Quechua make standard ones up to 4 man, and they also have ones with porches, right up to three-room family versions and ones with full-stand up height living spaces.

I think the double skin ones are fine, with two provisos:

1. For me, the shape of them when packed is unwieldy compared to a traditional tent.

2. Learn to fold it at home, so you're not struggling to pack it up in the rain or when you're in a rush.

I took a 4 man quechua last year to glasto for 4 adults last year no problems at all took 2 mins to put up around 4 mins to put down only problem is it packs up in to a massive circle so you have to either take it on a trolly or put you backpack on a trolly didnt notice any leakage at all i got mine from decathlon

http://www.quechua.com/EN/touring-tents-13801076/

Hope this helps

ps i will be taking this tent again this year as the ease of putting it up and taking down makes up for having to take a trolly
