There are reasons people will need it.

I will unfortunately need it as I am self employed and need to do a little bit each day. :(, Hopefully only around an hour or two wed-fri and monday and nothing on sat/sun.

Will be using my o2 data plan though. Really wish I didn't have to work because I wont be able to relax fully but I gotta take the good with the bad, for example if i'm too f**ked in the days following glasto I can work from home!

No worries, if you try and use an O2 data plan you won't be able to do any work. The network only just about manages to deal with mobile calls. The chances you get any kind of data transfer is practically zero.

I'm self employed and I would never risk business by not make sure my customers are 100% aware I will not be available throughout the festival. If you have to be available I would really recommend trying to sort out some kind of alternative arrangement and not rely on getting mobile internet at Glastonbury.

I'm self-employed too, and I make sure all my customers know I'm going to be unreachable Weds - Mon. I really wouldn't rely on any sort of connectivity, from any of the mobile phone networks - and quite aside from that, I wouldn't trust myself to have the self-restraint to actually get the work done anyway.

Seriously, what are you going to do? Work on your laptop in your tent? Sit down with a cuppa and your netbook in the Tiny Tea Tent like you're in Starbucks? I really don't think it's workable.

Hiya,

Last year i used my three mobile to surf the net a few times when was lying in tent with a hangover - viewing mobile versions of the news suites was just about bearable, but connection speeds were terrible!

Think that we are only there one weekend, only orange bother putting up extra masts, otherwise you are using the same masts that normally probably serve 500 people... so don't count on being able to do ANY emailing or internet based work over the weekend, you will be very lucky to be able to make and recieve calls! I usually rely on just sending messages and turning the phone on only when i need to see what people have sent me.

Making calls after about 11pm is useually easier, so i guess maybe you might have beetter luck with the net then?

But really, consider this a holiday, I seriously doubt you'll be able to get anything done...

I too am self employed and need to have access to a laptop with a fast Internet connection in case any of the web apps or servers I manage have urgent problems which cannot wait for 5 days (I cannot tell somebody that their e-commerce site or Intranet will be offline for 5 days if there is a failure on Wednesday). What I have done is the following (perhaps excessive but at least I can then enjoy myself without worrying that I may need to go home to deal with an urgent issue).

1. I have installed PDAnet on my Android smartphone and have an Orange 3G SIM card. This allows me to connect the phone to my laptop via a USB cable and then obtain near-broadband speed Internet connection for my laptop. I keep my laptop in the CND property lockups and leave a nice donation every time I need access to the laptop and it is kept very securely.

2. And here is the excessive bit, should there be any problems with Orange 3G data connectivity on site I have also booked a cheap room at a B&B in Shepton Mallet for the Wed and Sunday night and they have BT broadband there and will allow me to keep the car there for the duration and also pop back and use their broadband if necessary.

I will also tell all my clients that I am away from Wed to Tuesday and can only be contacted in case of emergency. Hopefully there will be no problems so I will not need to use the laptop at all (I'll check emails on the smartphone). However, two years ago I had a server crash on Wed morning and major problems with the restoration of SQL data by the datacentre people which could have ruined Glasto had I not brought the laptop with me. Luckily the datacentre eventually resolved everything and I did not actually have to spend any time working. I treat having a laptop with access to all my apps and servers as a sort of comfort blanket, without it I fear I would not be able to relax. Sad I know...

Last year I was on 02. I would get about 10 messages coming through every morning at about 4am, but nothing through the day. I then got a message five days after glasto had finished, by a friend telling me where she was stood watching Kasabian! 02 is by far the worst.

This doesn't sound excessive to me, it sounds positively sensible.

I would say the likelihood of getting any kind of workable connection on any network is very slim.

Also, I used to work for a mobile company, in 'extenuating circumstances' where load on the data network is high on a certain network the first thing they do is block non-consumer ports (pretty much everything other than 80 and 443) so you might want to make sure you have a VPN for ssh and ftp access.
