Bus from Castle Cary to Pilton

Hi Cat,

Do you mean the shuttle bus from the station that takes you to the site?

I can't remember, but it is quite long. I thought in my naivity that it would be like 10mins or something, but it was ages - but whether that ages was 30mins or an hour or even longer I honestly couldn't tell you.

But I must warn you that the queues at Castle Cary take about an hour before you get on a bus. The reason to tell you this is not to fill you with dread, but to say to take your rucksack off in the queue, and kick it along as the queue moves. I didn't realise it would take so long and after an hour my back was agony! And when you get off the train you'll need to lift your stuff up steps to cross the footbridge over the railway track - people with trolleys fully loaded with beers found this really difficult, but carry bags are easy.

Hope this helps.

Most people are on site Wed/Thurs, but you may get caught up with those that couldn't get Friday off work.

If you're lucky you can walk first off the train, get on the bus, gone in 5 mins and there in 20. Then again could be hours. Basically, when you get off the train you enter the 'Glastonbury timezone and basically just need to chill out, like these guys ...

Glasto_1 is right.

Last year I got to Castle Cary on the Wednesday morning and queued in baking sunshine for three hours. My girlfriend rocked up at about the same time on the Thursday and got straight on a bus.

Having said that, I think by Friday evening you're virtually guaranteed to get through there quickly. The festival is well underway and there shouldn't be too many people still arriving.

In fact, are you sure you don't want to turn up earlier?

Last time I went (which was 2005) the only wait I had at Castle Cary was for the bus driver to finish his tea - I was there about 11am on the Wednesday and must have been ahead of the rush. I think I was walking on site around noon, but the footy will bring the hordes on Weds this year I think.

One small point is the train from Paddington (apologies to non-Londoners). Their always a bit paranoid about fare-dodgers, etc, and crowds at Padd so they give you boarding passes and have a corral for anyone on the Glasto trains. Also, get there early as they stop you getting on several minutes before the train is due, even if you have a seat reservation - and sometimes they won't let you on at all if you don't.

  • 8 months later...

Was wondering what the Castle Cary shuttle service was like last year Friday evening, now that most people arrive Wednesday and Thursday? I'm thinking of getting a train down and should be arriving about 6.30 in Castle Cary. Any advice would be welcome as I'm thinking of sticking to what I know and driving from London at 4pm..

I turned up on the Wednesday & queued for 20 minutes max. Most buses I saw were Routemasters... you put your bags on the lower deck so there's plenty of room upstairs & the journey goes pretty quick if you're with your mates. The journey isn't too long but traffic slows the bus down a bit.
