Cross-country shortcut from A303

Does anyone coming from the east along the A303 have any experience with cutting the ‘A37 corner’ out by heading through Castle Cary on the A371? We were thinking of cutting through Ditcheat and hitting the A37 near Pilton. Bad idea? Any other recommended shortcuts? This will be around 6:30AM on Wednesday.

Done this route every year since 2002 with no problems*, is generally quicker than going to A37 junction.

*No problems until last year, when it was just as snarled up as every other route and the police closed all the A371-A37 cross routes.

Done both of these and yes the A371's a quicker and nicer route. But just wondering if theres a junction off the A303 direct to Bruton and then further onwards?
