Where did you get your tent from:

Model/Name/brand of tent:

When did you buy the tent & do you buy new ones all the time:

Is there anything that you should have taken to a festival with you, but you didn’t need it? or did you forget anything?

Did you have to purchase many items in order to come to the festival?

If YES, where did you shop for those items:

Which outdoor brands/stores do you prefer to purchase from, i dont know where to go!

Whats the most neccesarry kit needed for these below:

1. Camping in general:

2. Going to Festivals:

Where did you get your tent from:

Not strictly relevant as i'm in a campervan this year....

But last year we took a Vango 5-man - can't remember the model but it's one you can stand up in (wanted a bit of luxury).

Previously i've taken 3-man dome tents.

When did you buy the tent & do you buy new ones all the time:

Don't buy new ones all the time as I already have 2 and a campervan!! The Vango was a gift so I don't know where it came from.

Is there anything that you should have taken to a festival with you, but you didn’t need it? or did you forget anything?

Have taken LOADS that I didn't need - too much food, clothes I didn't wear etc. Don't think i've ever forgotten anything....

Did you have to purchase many items in order to come to the festival?

Other than my ticket ( :D ) there wasn't anything i HAD to purchase in order to come. There are lots of things I always think i need to get though!

If YES, where did you shop for those items:

All over the place! Argos, Tesco, Asda, Go Outdoors, Wilko, The Range, Milletts, various clothes shops, charity shops etc....

Which outdoor brands/stores do you prefer to purchase from, i dont know where to go!

Go Outdoors is fab and you can get some amazing savings if you also get a discount card (£4 for the year). I also like Oswald Bailey. I've heard good things about Decathlon but never bought there. Argos often has very good offers on basic camping gear too as do many supermarkets.

Whats the most neccesarry kit needed for these below:

1. Camping in general:

Tent, torch, sleeping bag, blanket if it's cold, clothes, waterproofs, camping stove, basic saucepan ket, basic washing-up kit, basic foods, pillow, towel and washing stuff, camping chairs and table (nice for a bit of comfort), suncream, gaffer tape (good for emergency fixes)

2. Going to Festivals:

Ticket!! Tent, torch, sleeping bag, blanket if it's cold, clothes, waterproofs, wellies, sun cream, sun hat, decent day bag, alcohol, wet wipes, loo roll, good comfy footwear, (good for emergency fixes)

Best advice for Glastonbury is pack light (you'll have to carry your gear a long way) and be realistic about what you'll need (i always take loads of clothes then live in the same clothes most of the weekend).

Where did you get your tent from:

Very.co.uk - at the time it was the cheapest place that had the particular tent we wanted in stock.

Model/Name/brand of tent:

Gelert Ottawa 4

When did you buy the tent & do you buy new ones all the time:

Last year... until now I tend to have brought a new tent almost every year but that's been due to changes of circumstance really; i.e. deciding that a tent with 2 bedrooms would be better when sharing with a friend, then going back to one dome when sharing with a partner, then deciding we needed a bigger porch to accomodate gear and muddy boots... last year on our first trip to Glastonbury we decided it was worth the effect to lug a larger tent that we could stand up in. Hopefully this one will be around for a while!

Is there anything that you should have taken to a festival with you, but you didn’t need it? or did you forget anything?

We definitely over estimated on food last year - we had enough cereal bars to last a month! This year I've written meal plans to make sure we don't take too much. We tend to eat breakfast & lunch at the tent to keep food costs down. I've never forgotten anything; I have a festival 'list' that gets updated and shortened where possible every year!

Did you have to purchase many items in order to come to the festival?

Apart from the essentials there's nothing you need to buy in order to go really, at a push you can buy everything you need on site. Personally I buy something new every year - mainly because I read other people's shopping lists & go 'ooh, that's a good idea!'

If YES, where did you shop for those items:

I get most items from eBay, pound stores and places like Wilkinsons & B&M.

Which outdoor brands/stores do you prefer to purchase from, i dont know where to go!

I've used Go Outdoors before, but I don't really have a preferance as such. I tend to decide what it is I want, then find out where does it cheapest!

The answers to these are pretty standard - just have a look at any packing list on the boards. Personally the things that make my festival aren't essential, but worth it in my opinion to make carrying them from the car worth it. These are things like an airbed, trangia, full length fleecy poncho (great for by the campfire at night and makes a good blanket too) and a camping chair to rest achey legs!

The tent I used for the first time last year was one I got for £4 on the last day of the Woolworth's closing down sale. Even survived the torrential rain, and is all in all a very good tent.

A lot of the other stuff I need I source from local pound shops and charity shops. And I look out for stuff in bootsales too.

Is this stuff really useful for market research then?

Army surplus for me this year.

There is a Millets, a Balcks and a Cotswolds near me (plus seasonals at Wilkos and Sainsburys') so I am often able to drop in and have a look at the latests.

Eurohike is my usual brand and I am most familiar with. Generally solid, good bangs per buck but usually a few years behind in any design (the pop up tents really show this up) and a little heavier than other designs.

I always tend to buy in the sales so even cheaper.

You can pay more for lighter kit but I have had 2 tents damaged at festivals, why wate the money?

You can pay less and wate your money entierly.

I have been camping since I was a kid, my family had to live in a tent for a couple of years so I got a good understanding from them.

For a festival I want a self supporting tent, that does not need guy ropes (so that sends me to a pop-up or a fly first pitched dome, chunky X, V or T cross sectioned tent pegs for the corners means it is down solid and stays down solid for the duration), a porch for boots and lounging in, well ventelated. A Mesh inner to protect from bugs and drips of condensation and help mark out "this area is for sleeping, this are is for other stuff".

Do remeber mallet, peg puller, car dangly air freshner (you're spending 5 days in a tent, think about it!) and a small repair kit of gaffa tape, string, the end of a roll of black bin liners (about 4 or 5 left on the roll is usually enough)) and a knife/good scissors. With these last items you can fix most damage/accidents to your tent and if you can't fix/bodge it to last the rest of the festival with these, you are well and truely in need of a replacement tent.

Going back to millets as examples

Dart, Avon, Tamar and simmilar designes are all good. Their paterned tents are on the tamar design. The Ness looks good as well.

Ryde and Cairns are inner first, I have tents that pitch inner first not so solid. The outer is notmally clipped on and can be Kicked off (and there is usualy some gormless oik who finds it easier to kick through rather than walk round a tent). Inner first tents are better in warmer climates (if you are going to one of the festivals in Spain) as you can pitch just the inner when it is stifling hot. For the UK they are OK but for festivals, not so good.

The Kent takes up the same floor space when pitched as the Avon but has less usable space and height, same weight as well. So avoid unless you are expecting it to be very windy.

Tunnels and ridge tents (like their retro) are prone to sag, and rely on guy ropes for strength, and as guy ropes get tripped over in festivals, so best avoid anything that depends on them.
