I can see every episode being along these lines:

Ricky: Today we are sending Karl to....<insert place name here>

Karl: <Makes stupid comment about place>

Ricky: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Karl then spends the rest of the episode in the aforementioned place doing silly things and walking about going "this is rubbish" "I hate it here" intercut with clips of Stephen sniggering and Ricky going "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA"

We could go on arguing about this all day, but I can safely say he is one of the stupidest people on the planet. Have you actually listened to some of the shite he spouts. Thats not an act, not ever. Have you ever listened to him trying to grasp the "infinite monkeys/infinite time will produce the entire works of shakespeare" concept? You can actually hear the cogs going round in his head.

if he is a character, he is stunningly good at it. I still find him incredibly funny - and as long as it works for me I will watch him. the minute it even appears staged I will stop.

I think that Pilkington is a character. He probably came out with something stupid one day, and Gervais kinda ran with it, and the character was built from there.
