KP clearly isnt a written character. I have all the XFM radio shows they did together and have heard them countless times. You can hear Gervais and Merchants interest in him grow with each passing week. There was one episode where Gervais read out a review of the radio show -from the times maybe- on air which suggested Pilkington was a creation of Gervais/ Merchant. As Gervais said at the time; "It takes us months to write 30mins of television. This show is 2hrs every week!". Merchants reply; "If i had written a character this good i wouldnt waste him on this poxy radio show". That sums it up nicely.

As to whether Pilkington is stupid or not, i would say definitely not. He has several blind spots, if you can call them that, but its just his way of looking at the world that people find so amusing. Over the years i've agreed with an uncomfortable amount of Karls theories and so has Gervais actually. Its just that the way Karl presents those theories out of his gimp round head has most people in stitches. So he had a good job? Theres plenty of intelligent people with shit jobs so why cant a (relative) fool have a good job? He found something he was good at and made the most of it. That should be praised. As Merchant said, "The man is working at the limit of his powers!".

Long live Pilkington.

Thats mental.

Did you say the same about Borat or Ali G? Some people in the US thought Borat was real.

As regards Pilkington you can choose to laugh at someone making ignorant comments about his surroundings or you can chose to laugh at a talented comic using the ruse of stupidity to make very clever comedy. He may not be created from the ground up but he is certainly an exaggeration. You only have to see his interviews on the culture show to see its a gag.

i don't see why some people find it so impossible to believe that he's not a character. he's just a normal guy who's a bit daft.

the type of humour is definitely not for everyone, but i don't think those of us who enjoy it need to be told why we shouldn't enjoy it.
