pink_triangle
Following up from a pub conversation yesterday. Who are the bands who growing up you thought would be big but never really took off. A few of mine. 1. Crackout - Wrote 2 albums of catchy pop songs, I think if radio 1 had supported them, they wouldnt have headlined festivals but would have sold a lot of records. 2. Hell is for heroes - After their debut I thought they were the great british rock/metal hope but they just dropped off the face ot the earth. 3. 3 Colours red - After the commercial success of beautiful day I thought they were destined to headline arenas but they never followed it up. Any other thoughts?

jump
Completely agree about Hell Is For Heroes, that's brought back teen memories. Halloways, kind of more legit catchy indie pop band but somehow other bands have taken over from them. [spunge], Story So Far threw them above the ska punk scene with loads of hype from Kerrang but have only recently managed to follow up that album and now it's like what's the point. Violent Delight, where a fun crappy punk band who wrote shit songs and had decent videos and were singed to a major label but like most UK punk bands they get ignored infavour of the America counterparts. Saw their comeback gig a few years ago promising a new album and some festivals shows but never materialised and I don't think they have played a show since then. T.A.T., very cool female fronted punk band got a load of hype from their "Peace, Sex & Tea" single and some decent support slots but took too long to release their album and when they did they didn't actually tour it in the UK. The girl now works in a coffee shop.
the_hedge
22/20s Great 1st album, execllent live and sounded different to anything around at the time.
OneLittleFish
I genuinely thought that Attic Lights were going to be the biggest band in Britain.
Steve P
I always thought Redwood should have been big. Colourblind is a fantastic album.
BlackHole2006
Guided By Voices should have been massive, Isolation Drills was on par with any decent arena rock album, but they still remain relitavely unknown to this day.
sifi
The Little Angles should have ruled the world.
BlackHole2006
Also The Dears could have been the next Arcade Fire and were just about to break into the mainstream but Arcade Fire kind of took over them (not saying that Arcade Fire are shit by any means)
ampersand
cave in. especially after they got the dave grohl seal of approval.
Benj
Morning Runner, a debut album packed full of decent coldplay like anthems, music licensed on all sort of TV shows, decent live ...disappeared. I suspect it was mainly down the front man being a bit chubby, there's no slightly chubby front men out there

RABun
keane were the opposite. chubby front man and the first album was huge. then he junkied up, became thin and now their popularity seems to have gone down somewhat. least it has where i'm standing... pink_triangle
Keane are still getting number 1 albums so they arent doing too bad. To add 1. Easyworld- Good cult following but no hit to break through to the mainstream. 2. The subways - Seem to have been around forever and despite decent media support their fanbase seems to have stayed pretty static.

jump
Dead 60's, they were just about to release their 2nd album (which was brilliant) and had just played main at Reading festival when they decided to break up and the 2nd album never ever got released and I could of seen them taking off after that. Lithium05
InMe - First album was very well received. Took too long to bring out a follow up (through no fault of their own, the record company they were signed to got bought out and the buyers dropped them). By the time the 2nd album was released Kerrang and the like had moved on to the emo craze and had no time for them. Released two more albums the latest of which has seen them turn cynical and jaded about the music industry which is reflected in the lyrics (try "All Terrain Vehicle" and "Single of the Weak" to see what I mean) and is arguably their best work, but working from an Indie label they'll never reach the heights they reached with their debut. Still have a good following and always attract a crowd though. Edited July 30, 2010 by Lithium05

luckysalt
Nine Black Alps First album was full of great tunes and I really thought they'd be the next big thing and then they just didn't go anywhere... Thought they'd become a huge UK rock band who would catch on in the US too and be filling arena's and headlining festivals, shame they just didn't catch on
the_hedge
I loved these, they were great live. They split up soon after the first album, but I've just recently discovered they have reformed and now have a new album out which you can get at their website. Not sure they'll get any success from it, but it's nice to have proper UK blues-based indie rock done well as not many people do it.

Lithium05
As if to illustrate your point, I saw the lead singer of InMe opening up for Therapy? back in March, just playing accoustic stuff on his own.
ampersand
I can go one better - I saw him playing in a pub in Woking a couple of months ago. That said, InMe are headlining the 4th stage at sonisphere this weekend, so the may be down, but they're not out.
