rexclark
Mansun and Kula Shaker....small success but should have gone on to bigger things.
PeterD
Zumpano. They released a couple of albums in the mid nineties on Sub Pop, a couple of singles before splitting. The two albums, Look What The Rookie Did and Going Through Changes were incredibly good. Success never came for them though. I think Jason Zumpano worked with Destroyer for an album or two and Carl Newman turned up in The New Pornographers. Hefner. They were the self styled largest small, a slew of albums all of them fantastic, festival appearances and regulars on Peel and as ubiquitous in the festive fifty as Don't Stop Believing is in the big boys chart. Each album built and built with every tune a potential single, veering from tender sparse lofi songs to Dexy's influenced joy before elctronica telling the story of Alan Bean, the 6th man on the moon. The world was at their feet, but chose not to listen. The singer, Darren Hayman, still sings as a solo artist, the drummer, Ant Harding, moved to Sweden and releases occasional singles and albums, the bassist, John Morrison, gave up on the music lark and the guitarist, Jack Hayter, released a solo album and plays occasionally in London. They were good, then they split up, they should have been bigger.
lifelessfool
I allways thought Elle Milano and the grammatics would make it big, Elle Milano for me were one of the greatest bands of the decade and were criminally under rated. BlackHole2006
Surprises Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong havn't been mentioned. Loads of hype from NME, Played The Other Stage at Glasto, great reviews in magazines about album, could have been huge, but just suddenly dissapeared and the album never got released. lifelessfool
Pretty sure Grammatics are doing one last tour in a couple of weeks, then that's it. That group of bands on DTTR in about 2007 could have been huge, but nothing seemed to materialise from it. Think they got a great group of bands together, then just didn't know what to do with them. Except The Pigeon Detectives, but you can't hold that against them. [/quote Yeah they are doing a farewell tour and selling things off, I think they just couldnt afford to be a band anymore which is a shame as they were nothing short of genius. Another band I forgot to mention is the answering machine, who recently featured on FIFA and artrocker sing nothing but praise for them. timespeedsup
Morning Runner, a debut album packed full of decent coldplay like anthems, music licensed on all sort of TV shows, decent live ...disappeared. I suspect it was mainly down the front man being a bit chubby, there's no slightly chubby front men out there
ronaldo
the music! I love this band, but my god they're just infuriating. Fantastic debut and a solid second album, then they went through a few things and dropped off the face of the planet. When they brought out the third album in 08 i was happy to have them back but they haven't followed it up, a few shows in australia in feb 09 and after that NOTHING. The odd cryptic message on facebook, that's it. The website hasn't been updated since 2008, do they not realise that if the die hards are questioning whether they're still together then the casual fan wont even bother searching about it, they'll just accept they're gone. In comparison, weezer released the red album in the same week the music released strength in numbers in 2008. Difference is since then weezer knocked out an album in 09 and another one for this year, whilst the music have produced sweet f.a. unfortunately. I love the band, but i just wish they'd pull their f**king finger out!
Steve P
One more from me: Screaming Trees. Thought they'd break big from Nirvana's slipstream. Not a sniff alas.
Pogues Mcgogues
Teenage Fanclub should have been bigger than what they are. I agree with 1990s although I probably fall into the "fault" category. Seen them on support slots a few times then must have seen them 6 or 7 times after around the Cookies album (went to that launch and it was an amazing gig). Not seen them in a good while or properly listened to the new album. The Mountain Goats Dillinger Four
radish
The Little Angles should have ruled the world.
sifi
If you mean Little Angels, I agree. If you mean Little Angles I have no idea who you're talking about, but I'm sure they're good as well.
radish
I didn't know they didn't have a "The" at the front of their name. The ones who recorded She's a Little Angel, Don't Pray for Me, Radical your Lover, Kickin' up Dust, those kind of things.
sifi
Sorry, pedantic twat here just wasn't sure about the Angels/Angles thing. For all I know there's a kick-arse band called the Little Angles out there somewhere. As for the Little Angels, they were great live, had a number 1 album, started supporting and collaborating with international superstars (albeit shite) like Bon Jovi and Bryan Adams, so I too thought they were off to join Def Leppard as a transatlantic UK hit. Shame they just seemed to give up, release a best of and disappear.

pink_triangle
On a related note, and not a band, but David Ford should be huge. Amazingly talented, seems a genuinely nice guy, and releases great albums.
pink_triangle
Another band the editors, good debut, great second album, big glastonbury slot. I thought they were on their way to becoming one of britains biggest bands and then they go and release that awful third album.
