I'll always remember walking out of the hospital for the first time with our first baby thinking "ok, it's real now, what the f**k do we do?"... :D

The thing I also remember was how I wanted, desperately wanted her to be brought up as freely as possible, with the main rule being 'no rules!'

I still look at my kids and think that I'm still partly wondering what it means to be a dad

honesty, communication, consistency, open up their minds as much as possible, don't say they can't do something unless you have a good reason, be there for them...

above all, LOVE THEM

similar to how I feel for anyone I care about really... these are my main 'foundations'

it is a general rule I have, which means it's good to question what are often percieved as rules as they often don't appply

I don't see what's so hard to understand

I did end up with a few hard rules, through discovering it what worked and what didn't

as I've said, the main ones are things like honest and consistency

Consisteny being probably THE main one

"I've explained to you why you can't have anything you want" (while shopping)

"but I want it"

"ok then, if it means you'll shut up, have it"

that kind of thing (for example)

that's nothing to do with a need or desire to control them

it's usually illogical. Kids do things which 'we' say is wrong, but they don't understand why and it might need explaining to them

you'd punish your kid for running into the road?
