Arcade Fire have just had a number one album (the previous charted at 2). Soundgarden haven't and never will have a number one, or a top 3 album for that matter.

Arcade Fire have pratically sold out an arena tour including 2 dates at the 02. No way Soundgarden can sell out an arena tour in the U.K. And I bet they couln't sell out 1 date at the 02.

Arcade fire are probably the most critically acclaimed group about at the moment. Soundgarden never have come close to achieving critical accliam as close to this.

1. yes they could they have more than 20000 fans so im sure they would sell out the o2. I didn't say they didn't have 20,000 fans, but the amount of fans and how many would go to a gig and in one location is a different thing. Not all fans go to gigs. And the ones that do aren't always willing to travel. I'm pretty fond of Gorrilaz but wouldn't go down to the 02 to watch em.

and:

2. (this is my opinion if you dont like it, i dont care): Arcade Fire have only got to where they are now due to NME and Radio1 arselicking them dry, and if it wasn't for this then they would be another mediocre band. The last album got a metacritic score of 86. High scores from places such as billbord, Q magazine, New york times, pitchfork etc. How you can they would be a mediocre band if nme and radio1 didn't arselick I don't kno. If you said they wouldn't be as big, I could take that opinion, but still disagree. But putting their critical acclaim down to them 2 is frankfully rubbish.

People are forgetting SG were responsible for Grunge. First band to get signed, lead the way for pearl jam, nirvana etc. Got to understand how f**king huge SG were. Yeah their career was begining to slope down before they split, but who cares....... This is a band who eeveryone knows at least one songs to, are legendary and reuniting, have headlined the festival before, and have huge influence.

plus who gives a f**k how acclaimed Arcade Fire are. The fact is they didn't draw a crowd... it was a shame... but there was f**kk all anyone there. This proves that populairty is not the only reason behind booking a headliner.

Anyone who says SG are not headliner worthy either don't really know music, the festival or did in fact like Blink-182 :P

whilst i agree that soundgarden are very unlikely to headline reading(download more likely), some arcade fire fans have hugely underestimated how big and influential soundgarden were.

and if you want to bring critical aclaim into it,soundgarden have at least 3 albums that are widely regarded as all time classics.but, unless soundgarden get announced early and loads of fans snap up day tickets,im afraid they would have an arcade fire size crowd.

download headline would ensure huge crowd(see faith no more last year)and a more appreciative audience.

If you look at the average age of Reading festival goers, especially this year (might just be me getting older) I would guess that at least 30% would not be able to tell you a single Soundgarden song, and most of the rest would only know one. They may be good enough to headline but they are no way big enough. They may be very popular to grunge fans but there is not enough cross-over appeal for them to headline a pop/rock festival which is what Reading & Leeds clearly is now. They would sell a lot of day tickets but it would'nt be enough. Download though, yes.

This stuff makes me laugh.

What you have done here is plucked a number out of the sky, treated it as a fact, and tried to use it as a valid arguement. You can't go that.

Pixies headlined once yes? A band that where never huge, but were very very influencial, and had a history with the festival. They didn't draw a huge crowd, but it doesn#'t matter. The fact is headliners are not picked on size alone. They are picked on a vast array of things. Influence, past popularity, and reunions being a HUGE factor is why SG could easily headline.

and do it with a lot more class and skill than the likes of Blinkoneeightytwo

Hey guys,

I haven't read the whole thread, so I don't know if this has been mentioned, but do you reckon Melvin could pull out something big seeing as it's Reading's 40th Anniversary in 2011? I don't really know what that would consist of though, as most years, the headliners are all pretty huge anyways...

My opinion based on who's got new albums, and which festivals they've played this year, could be anyone of the following:

Muse

Foo Fighters

The Strokes

Iron Maiden

Red Hot Chili Peppers

I can't really think of any others at the moment, but I'm sure we'll all be shocked like we were with Arcade Fire this year...
