The Libertines - what a waste of a million pounds

I only saw about four songs of their set, but thought they were OK and nothing special, but the. Saying that I think that of their music in general. The people we were camped with though were massive fans and were desperate to see them. When they came back from seeing their set though they said they'd "shit all over my dreams" and "they would have been the best band of the weekend.....if they hadn't been absolutely awful"

I'll confess that I had deliberately avoided ever listening to The Libertines because of my feelings about the behavior of PD. But I gave them a chance at Reading and was surprised at the power and emotion of the set. I wouldn't go and see/fund them at one of their own concerts, but I'm prepared to acknowledge that I was wrong and that they're a very good band. I enjoyed it.

Much, Much better than the trainwreck I was expecting. Sure they missed a few notes, and forgot to sing a line or two but overall it was an emotionally charged setlist and although a bold move, it was a brilliant Idea from FR that worked. The Half I watched before leaving for NoFX was Hit record after hit. Overall a very good, entertaining crowd pleaser and everything a sub-headliner should be.

I'm really happy that so many people who'd been looking forward to them enjoyed it but I do wonder how many people who are saying they were amazing saw them back in the day. I've seen them three times in the last seven days and unfortunately, they seem to be a shadow of their former selves. Perhaps unsuprisingly all the chemistry, which they used to be able to conjure up everywhere from Brixton Academy to their front room to the Rhythm Factory and back again, seems to be gone.

Also, there were loads of people around us at Reading who seemed really excited before they came on and then didn't seem to know a single word to Horrorshow, The Delaney or Vertigo. Weird.

They were absolutely terrible

Festival republic wasted a million pounds to find out 2 thing we already knew

  • Pete Doherty is a wate of space

  • Libertines really wernt that good before they split up

But do you not think it was different? This was two best friends, who have had probably more issues in there lives than most of us experiance, back on stage together clearly loving it?

Open arenas are alot harder to get the energy across, but the emotion was there and its definatly a gig not to forget.

Different than they used to be... Yes. Worse? I don't personally think so, I think it would of been wrong to expect them to be exactly how they were in the early 00's.

Edit - Also you are always going to get people that only know 'Can't Stand Me Now' 'DLBITS' and 'Time for Heroes' but its a festival they are not all die hard fans. Although at the front I was being grabbed by people who were singing lyrics from the Delaney to Tell the King to Can't stand me now.
