aha yeah it's still annoying though. I'd much rather travel somewhere north than south purley because i don't have to pay bridge going north :P

I don't know why i thought this, but i thought leeds was a rough place..

I suppose i'd also want somewhere where theres an asda or tesco close. Silly i know but knowing theres a supermarket near makes me feel safe :P

I looked at the course I wanted to do, and only 2 universities offered it as an undergraduate degree; one was Brookes, the other was Loughborough. I'd been to Loughborough and the sound of trainers squeaking on a gym floor and the sight of people doing endless f**king exercise put me right off.

Hi Sara (may I call you Sara?). I am presuming that you are applying for nursing for 2011 so can I say a few things?

llCoolphil mentions other routes. If you can get a HCA job with a major organisation you can still do you Diploma for Adult/Mental Health Nursing part time with the Open University and have a wage/fees paid. As he said you can get a sponsored place, but as has been mentioned they are time limited and few and far between. With the present restraints on funding I would hazard they would be suspended. (If I am wrong sorry :( )

People have mentioned Diploma courses. As they are being phased out from next year the chance of getting on one is lessing. A look on the UCAS site shows that only around 30 schools out of over 70 are offering them. From 2013 all new entrants need to have a degree so I would say it would be wise to follow that route ?? (Again if I am wrong sorry :( )

As to Uni's. Do you have a car? Even if you do you have to realise that many Uni's have placement hospitals up tp 15 or 20 miles away from base/home. I was offered a place at Salford but my placement/mentor was in Rochdale, which from my house was over 15 miles. I am a public transport animal, but I think even with a car you need to think if it is off the road. You have x amount of time to make x amount of experience on placements. A broken down car could leave you working through your holidays.

Also think on how your placements are going to work. Salford and Manchester did it on 3 days on ward and 2 in school. Some schools do it x amount in school and y on block (placement). What would suit you? You will be expected to fit into the shift pattern/shadow your mentor. Don't forget you only get 6 weeks off, so is a Sept or March start better for you??

Don't panic on funding. You wiil be fine, and can get loads of bits and bobs (I am having to fund my first 3 years :()

Go where you feel you will be comfortable and able to make friends ;)

My decision wasn't hard. I only originally wanted to go to Bournemouth because it's supposedly the best for TV Production. Applied for a few other unis just for the sake of applying to 5 universities. Then I got an interview at Gloucestershire, fell in love with the campus and the tutor was wonderful and I got a great vibe about it. Was promised an offer. Got interviews at Staffordshire and Hertfordshire, neither of which I went to because I knew they couldn't compare to Gloucestershire.

Aaaand a year in, I'm certain I made the right choice.

Just to add. I do have a preference for a "Campus University" rather than one spread over a city. I really enjoyed my time at Hull, yet it was not the same when I got to Manchester. I have just started at Salford and when I applied I only looked at campus Unis with an hour and half travelling distance. It may seem like academic snobbery but I enjoy the concept of all the facilites being in one space. At Hull the students union bar was precisely 455 steps from the lab I worked in, and I could time 4 Newcastle Browns in an hour during a lab session which was far easier than having a watch.

It was quite funny setting off a 6 hour bichemistry/genetics experiment to say to the lecturer "I'll be back in an hour". Most people went to the library to try to get some grasp on what the f**k we were cooking up. I decided the bar was safest, as well as having the previous years students there ;)

Someone touched on this already, but remember that if you are considering Nursing, then most or all of your study may be at a slightly obscure location maybe even nowhere near the named University.

I work for the University of Nottingham (though not in the School of Nursing). A large chunk of our Nursing students are based at the main Nottingham hospital which is right next door to the main University campus, so they're very well located for full immersion into University Life. However many of our other Nursing students are based at hospitals in smaller towns (Derby, Mansfield, Boston, Grantham, and Lincoln) where the student experience is going to be quite a bit different. That's not necessarily a bad thing, different hospitals have different specialities and some people may prefer less distractions or a smaller community.

As I understand it, our setup in that respect isn't considered unusual. I know that we allow people to apply specifically to the location(s) of their choice, but I don't know if that happens everywhere.

Sorry Ive stayed off here but I dident get into uni this year yet.. Reserve list as I put it in late..

I made it based on where I wanted to go as I knew what I wanted to do **Travel and Tourism management or Hospitality magement**,Plus I want to get out of Telford where I live and move on and not be compleatly out of range for emergancys.

I had heard some good reviews on places from other people.. So I decide to apply and go and see the place and fall for it.. Place was Edgehill just outside of Liverpool in Knowsley.. The Fees are good as well.

So applying again for next year and getting it in early :)
