I dont only like small bands. I grew up on metallica, ac/dc, maiden, megadeth etc, I can just spot a fad band from a mile off, and KoL are a fad band. They have no longevity. They are milking the success of sex on fire and that other song they had. and anyone who falls for it it gonna pay whatever they ask for tickets. The minute the BBC starts using your music for trails and montages - you know you are a fad band.

They're not a fad band by any means. They built up a solid fanbase with the three albums previously. Initially they were hyped as they were the Gallagher's favourite new band and got a huge sunset slot at glastonbury off the back of this, but that was in 03/04, half a decade before they blew up.

What makes kings of leon different to most fad bands is that their solidly built fanbase coincided with an album that was "more mainstream" and appealed to the masses (Again, natural progression since the third album was noticely more polished than the previous two). We're so used to bands either having a hit single and then being gone/ their stock having plummeted within three years (Looking at you franz ferdinand, razorlight) or bands that get the glass ceiling syndrome (such as qotsa, always the bridesmaid never the bride, will be second at a festival but never a headliner), that it's almost unbelievable that a band can work their way up the ranks and that it will actually pay off.

Quick bit of googling says they did an arena tour in late 07, best part of a year before the fourth record was out. Whilst it never hurts having a hit single, their success is due to a culmination of factors, and not simply riding the success of two extremely popular songs.

I'm afraid you are deluded. I am aware they had a solid fanbase, but not a great deal more than a band like qotsa. The 2 big singles are what got the dinner party set involved, and blasted them into hyperspace. If they dont come up with a new "Sex on Fire" the dinner party people will desert them, and the old fanbase will have gone. Mark my words.

Looking on seetickets it doesnt look like they are having any trouble shifting tickets at the price they set. I find this whole idea of pricing fans out funny. As every band makes the transition from small to big venues, some fans will be priced out, afterr all they arent charities. I suspect people would think its fair enough to see bands that they enjoy for £30 on an arena tour. The fact is kings of leon have probably sold twice as many albums and have twice as many people who want to see them. Its no different than the bigger football sides charging more money.

Kings of leon are no different to the likes of elton john, madonna, metallica, take that etc, the demand is there so the tickets are priced accordingly. I think people are naive to think that when their favourite bands decide ticket prices they put much consideration into ensuring fans can afford tickets. If your favourite bands not charging £60 a ticket its probably because the cant not that they wouldnt want to. I find peoples attitude to kings of leon funny. People criticise their new fans for following the crowd but these people are just following the crowd themselves by turning against a band when they have commerical success. I bet loads of the haters wouldnt mind sex on fire if it wasnt a hit.

Im a KOL fan (shock horror, awaits abuse), Ive found the progression of the band from YAYM upto OBTN to be quite a natural progression. If you find yourself in a position to try and become a massive band then your music is going to become more polished and mainstream, which has happened along the way. That been said when I first saw the prices of the tickets I nearly spat my coffee all over my computer screen, its a scandalous price to be asking, no band should think they can charge that for a gig when a festival ticket in comparison costs around £200 and thats three days of full music. I also think the new single and video is probably the worst things theyve ever done, the songs weak and the video is soo cringe worthy.
