Am I getting old...

...but there is a lot of bands around at the moment that are obscenely overrated in my opinion. I fully expect to get ripped into for this but I'm 27 now, and I simply don't seem to get half the bands around these days. Obviously this is just my opinion but -

Vampire Weekend - Really? What the f**k are they. I know they werent playing at Reading but bought the first album on a recommendation - Utter pretentious toss. So bad in fact that I can't believe that their fans even like them

Lost Prophets - I know they've been around for a while but I f**king hate them. Seen them twice now and cannot believe the reputation they command.

Pulled apart by horses - Saw them supporting Biffy last year. Just awful. A wall of noise with someone screeching over the top. The band even stopped playing to make everyone hi five each other. Seriously.

Parramore - The most lifeless sub headline performance I have ever seen. I was only there for Blink but is this really what the kids are listening to these days? Are they even a real band or did someone create them to make money?

All time low- I'm sorry I didn't know that angry McFly were playing at Reading this year.

Mumford and Sons - Oh look here is this years novelty band - see Franz Ferdinand, see Kaiser Chiefs.. - and he's playing a double bass!

Anything classed as RnB or Hip Hop - This can just f**k off

Just needed to get a few things off my chest. Maybe I'm just out of touch but it's a sad sign either way that I think the best band of the weekend behind Arcade Fire were Weezer. .. and Queens of the Stoneage.

I hate being old

A Tribe Called Quest

Public Enemy

De La Soul

Run DMC

Outkast

Mos Def

Lupe Fiasco

Jay Z (before he disappeared up his own arse)

Kanye West (See above)

Dizzee Rascal (see above again)

All have released excellent hip hop/RnB albums.

Judging an entire genre on the acts that are charting is idiotic.

It'd be like judging all of "rock" on Nickleback or all of "indie" on The Wombats and ignoring acts like The Shins, My Bloody Valentine etc. etc.

I am 30 and find the festival is no longer for me, my favourite bands in general are late 90s bands. One problem I have with reading/leeds is they seem to be too obsessed with being hip and trendy and having the next big thing. The nme tent seems to have become a glorified festival republic tent full of bands with just 1 album. I think in future I will just get day tickets for v or leeds depending on line up.

I plan on doing 200trees and Truck next year rather than my 8th Reading. For me It's largely about age and maturity; I'm less into the hedonism/egocentrism/recklessness/commercialism of the festival now than when I first went aged 19 in '99. But it's also about familiarity (nothing really changes each year) and practicality (I can do Truck and 2000trees for the same price).

I'm still very into music but at Reading I've seen all but almost all of my favourite big acts (Chilis, Offspring, Terrorvision, Blur, John Spencer Blues Explosion, Pixies, Pearl Jam, NIN, Smashing Pumpkins, Arcade Fire, foo's, Rage, Muse) with only Green day, Soundgarden and radiohead left on the must see list. Other than that I think I'm looking forward to catching the next big act or those who are past their peak popularity on smaller stages. Reckon I'll be back in future when I've got kids rampaging in brown while I chill out in White, you know just in case.
