Bands with female lead singers suck

Not meant to be a sexist rant. - Just simply can't seem to enjoy any band with a female lead singer. Think the closest I can get is Arcade Fire. Love Arcade fire but she's not really the lead singer.

When I see a band like Paramore it just doesn't work for me. It's just not quite right. Can anyone name any good bands with female lead singers? Is this a bloke thing or is it just a me thing?

Its a you thing. You clearly don't know enough bands.

On that note - do you mean bands specifically? Current bands to be even more specific? or is it female vocals full stop just not doing it for you? Just so I know before I throw loads of recommendations at you...

Bangles

Fleetwood mac

the donnas

st etienne

metric

cant think of any more...

I suppose its a bit like female vicars or football commentators/lineswomen you get the odd one or two but people dont really go for it and it is harder for them than their male counterparts...

I understand where your coming from, I think at times the girl is the lead singer cos shes hot and not because shes a good frontwoman, which is something I'm starting to see more and more from new local bands around me all trying to be the next Paramore when their lead singer is nothing more than a pretty face. And what about Hole? Obviously overrated but still a damn good band.

I used to think the same thing about female singers in general but realised it was me that was the problem. I was listening to too narrow a spectrum of music.

I opened my mind, eyes and ears and reversed my opinion almost completely.

I can see where you are coming from but as there really aren't that many bands fronted by females, the odds are that you're favourites would be male-fronted. I'm guessing that you are a rock/metal fan?

I'll chuck a few great bands in your direction, some of which have already been mentioned

The Selecter

Mazzy Star

The Breeders

Throwing Muses

The Pretenders

Yeah Yeah Yeahs

CSS

I still love Sleeper as well (well I still lust after Louise that is...)

But I think the area that female singers really shine are either as solo singer-songwriters or fronting a band that are little more than a vehicle for her.

Here's a real gem for you - check out Anais Mitchell, f**king amazing. (Try Laura Marling and Rachel Unthanks as well).

Try Lissie as well.

edit - Blondie are a great, groundbreaking band.

"I remember seeing L7 on The Word on c4 as a youngster and she pulled her pants down at the end of the song.."

I seem to remember that the rumour was that what followed was too gross even for the Word to broadcast........ :O

But yeah, I'm sort of on both sides on this one - there aren't that many good bands with a female lead singer, but I will go with Throwing Muses & the Breeders

Some really good bands being thrown around on this thread:

Blondie

St. Etienne

Throwing Muses

Yeah Yeah Yeahs

The Breeders

Mazzy Star

P J Harvey

Cat Power

Skunk Anansie

L7

Edit: didn't know somebody had mentioned Melt Banana

They're the best of the bands that have been mentioned thus far.

Some of my own contributions:

Patti Smith Group

8-Eyed Spy and Teenage Jesus & The Jerks with Lydia Lunch

Diamanda Galas

Cocteau Twins

My Bloody Valentine

Pretty much the whole Riot Grrl movement with bands like Bikini Kill, Babes in Toyland, etc

Thao Nguyen

10,000 Maniacs

The Sugarcubes

Jarboe

Mazzy Star have been mentioned before so I'll add Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions

Cowboy Junkies

The Sundays

Everything But The Girl

Jayne County (a transexual singer)

A recent band I saw called Warpaint which is entirely female

...there is a big female presence in the world of Rock music, and a lot of good bands. Whether you like them or not is subjective but I don't think it's right to say there are no good female-fronted bands or bands that have a prominent lead singer when there clearly is.

A lot of these bands are either Punk or Indie so it depends entirely on what type of music YOU actually like by narrowing it down to genres. That way we could probably say, "the best female Metal vocalists are..." or "the best female Punk vocalists are..." or something like that.
