Most youve spent on a record?

^ ah right. They do look rather spiffing up there though, and they're a talking point for any visitors we have. :)

I often wonder about giving them a little spin, but they've only ever been played once or twice so they're in mint condition at the moment. Better just to play the cd I think.

Aye. LPs... wow, they were tangible, tactile things which you could (still) associate with..to carry them home on the bus, with the front sleeve on show to all--showing your allegiance to Sabbath,Purple or whoever.

........

I`ve got plenty of tear and vodka stained inner sleeves I can tell you.

I love to set a joss stick away, put so lighting on and sit listening to the music of my teens with a wee puff.

Oh pack in--yer getting me going here..

Most I've spent was £70 on the Arab Strap boxset, which is worth every penny plus probably quite a few more.

I also drunkenly once put a £110 bid on the Blur Fool's Day single and was quite relieved when someone outbid me the next morning with ten seconds to go.

The equipment is not the hard thing. If you have a record player, a computer, a soundcard, and a few audio leads you should be able to connect things up no problem. There's even free audio recording programs out there (Audacity being about the best).

The biggest things are a) audio quality and b) 1:1 recording time.

You're going to get pops and crackles (from the vinyl) recorded onto your mp3 file. You may like that, which is fair enough, but if your needle is knackered, or the disc is old / well played then those artefacts will be preserved in that audio file forever. It'll never be as high quality as something you rip from a cd or download from t'interweb.

The second is that you have to record it in real time... ie you have to play the whole record in it's entirety. It's not like ripping a cd where it only takes 3 or 4 minutes to do a whole cd. A 45 minute 10" side will take 45 minutes to convert. (there are way to play it double speed and then digitally slow it down, but you get a certain amount of sound degradation with that).

Not so bad if you just want to convert 1 or 2 vinyls, but if you have a collection of 100s you want to convert... you're gonna be there forever.

Have to ask yourself... is it really worth it when the chances are the music you have is already available in some other medium - be it cd on on the tinterweb somewhere.

I'm ashamed to say but I think it was £1200 for a numbered copy of U2-3 - I then sold it a couple of years later on ebay for £1500

Twas nice to own it for a while along with other rare stuff, but we then decided to sell some of the rarest of the stuff we have to pay for our wedding

Ah well, I got into 'Record Collector' when I sold it on!

I hope I'm not the only one on here that wants to hear this story...

I was at the 3 Croker shows aswell. Thought the first one was the best. Its too bright in the evenings in Ireland in July to expect any kind of atmos. Sure only the last 45 minutes of the show were in darkness. Rubbish!!

But as regards what really caused the problems with the Claw tour. Spontaneity. They are "enslaved" to the production of the show. I don't think this has actually changed too much on this latest leg. Granted theres newer stuff and some returning greats - but in general the shows don't deviate more by more than 5 songs per night.

Either way it was great to hear Unforgettable Fire 3 times.

Oh - and just because I need to have a token whine - Gutted they dropped The Unforgettable Fire!! I was dreading hearing it last year - every bootleg I have with it on from previous tours has sounded a bit p'ah - it was just one of those songs that never came across well live and is possibly the only U2 song where I prefer the album version but I thought it sounded spot on last year! Then again, i'd be happy if they came on stage and just played the whole of the album a couple of times!
