nightcrawler13
Three guys go into a hotel and pay for a room between them, giving the manager £30 for the shared room. After they get their key and make their way to the room, the manager realises that they have overpaid, and being the nice hotel manager that he is gives £5 to the porter to return to the men. The porter trundles down to the room and on the way decides to keep £2 for himself. So when he reaches the room, gives the three men £1 back each.... If the three men paid £30 between them, that is £10 each. Since each received £1 back, they have paid £9 each... £9 x 3 = £27 £27 + the £2 the porter kept is £29, where is the other £1? i had to sit there and cut out 30 peices of paper, but still dont understand how the above can be factually correct, but still not? evilhasnever
It's the way its been worded... £30 to hotel manager £5 given back to porter = £25 actual price of room Porter keeps £2 (out of £5 given to porter) = £3 £1 given to each guy = £0! Colonel Mustard
It's worded wrongly to confuse. There's no missing £1.
nightcrawler13
i understand the riddle... what i dont understand is how the way it is worded can be correct, be give an incorrect answer?! they each paid £10, so if they each get a £1 back they each paid £9 £9 x 3 IS £27 but obviously this doesnt add up.... kingjamma
But they were all supposed to get roughly £1.66 back each which adds up to £5 and not £3, the porter took £2 that no one else knows about.
Paul ™
The porter is a c**t.
pehaw
The men paid £30 and got £3 back = £27 loss. The porter had £0 and stole £2 = £2 profit. The hotel had £0 and got £30 but gave £5 back = £25 profit Ie the men paid £27, effectively giving £25 to the hotel and £2 to the porter Net effect = £

jump
This reminds me of those short changing swindles people do with change at shops, just backwards and forwards so the clerks looses track and you come out with more money. dakyras
It's not £27+£2. It's £27-£2,+£5.
