Halal being served secretly throughout Britain

Is it done to avoid making anyone unintentionally eat something religiously forbidden to them? Or, is it done to save costs?

There used to be regular as clockwork protests about similar sorts of things 'round our way a few years ago, and I still like to bring up the same couple of points whenever animal rights are debated.

1) (Really important) It always worries me that some people seem to care more about animal rights than they do about human rights.

2) I think it was the comedian Stewart Lee who pointed out in an article I read somewhere (tongue in cheek I think it was, he is a comedian after all), that protesting about live exports, slaughter methods and the like, is an insult to our ancestors. They purposefully utilised what they understood about animal husbandry in order breed the most docile animals possible, in order to avoid being garroted, bitten, butted and mauled, in order to be able to herd them on to transport and move them from place to place, in order to be able to slaughter them in said place so that the meat is fresh and slaughtered according to local customs.

Point two is true and always winds up the people in point one

I know subway sells halal meat. And when i worked in a chippy, i noticed on the packaging to the kebabs they bought had 'halal' written on them..I said to the boss ohh thats strange buying halal kebabs why you doing that for?! and they didn't realise what they were buying..

You what? :blink::lol:

You do know that kebabs are from Islamic countries don't you?

Therefore it's extremely unlikely that non-halal kebab meat will be available (tho it's possible I guess that there might be Greek suppliers of kebab meat - tho they'll be only a very small proportion if they exist).

I don't see the difference - meat killed for eating is meat killed for eating - if we didn't eat it don't think farmers would keep herds of it.

If we were all vegetarians would our fields really be full of livestock? No, it wouldn't it's a crop same as anything else we eat.

I'm fairly sure if an animal is going to die it's not that bothered whether it's stunned first - it's going to die in the next few minutes anyway, and being told first, and prayed for might make it get prepared for the eternal night better.

Anyone see that Family Gap Year where they killed the goat using traditional methods - that was incredibly fast, and the animal seemed pretty chilled about it.

Mind you they serve halal meat at many of the country's big sports venues like Old Stratford - and therefore I'm staunchly against anything Man Who does. ;)

We tend to electrocute or stun the animals in some way before we cut into them...

Halal meat is produced by cutting the animals throat with a very deep cut with a very sharp knife...

There has been research to show Halal meat is a less cruel process as the brain is starved of oxygen before the animal has chance to process the pain. After stunning etc the animals brain as been shown registering pain after the stun...

The only problem with Halal meat is if the person makes a cut gets it wrong I suppose.

No problem with either approach.

Can't remember what it's called (it was boring & long name) but a mate is vegan and a body builder and it's the nutrient that allows protein to be built into muscle and he told me he had to take supplement for it.

*edit* Creatine

The Daily Mail can f**k off....

Eating meat is a personal choice.

Having working in an abattoir and also on beef, sheep and diary farms I see both sides of the coin. I am now a vegetarian and quite happy about that. However I would never dream of having ago at meat eaters.

Animal husbandry in the UK is excellent compared to other nations (not the best but but no means the worst)...

However what ever way meat is produced the welfare of the animal should be paramount as it does effect the quality of the product. So if the Halal method of slaughter is used then so be it, it has after all been used pretty much in every country in every land for generations.

Therefore if you think 30 seconds of death by having your throat slit is horrible and that "the scum get away with it" think about all the other issues relating to animal husbandry in the UK and Europe, rest of the world, rather than a method that in many cases is putting them out of their misery...swiftly.
