What is the future for the BBC?

In the Moyles discussion I asked the question - When did radio 1 stop being primarily a music station?

Having not listened to the Moyles show in years as I don't like him I was amazed when someone wrote

Most chats on that show revolve around something that's happened to one of the team or something they've seen/read/heard. The first 30 minutes usually has no songs in it

I know that millions listen to Moyles every morning and enjoy his show, but is this what the BBC should be doing on it flagship music station? Shouldn't the focus of radio 1 be to play as much music as possible and make the music the star of the show? Should they be chasing ratings rather than trying to offer diversity?

Id generally agree, but the fact that they're freezing the licence means we are forced to consider alternatives. I could live with Radio 1 going over to commercial radio, even Radio 2 at a push. Id much rather this than pulling the plug on as much of the World Service as is being discussed.

When Radio 1 started with Tony Blackburn etc ---all it did was play music. There was very little personal chat etc. Everybody listened to it cos there was very little else apart from the pirate stations etc.

Of course some of the DJs began to get big egos and there was occasional controversy... but it seems to me that over the last 10-15yrs... the presenters seem to think they are bigger than the station..the show is about them, their personal stuff and that.

I havent a clue who this Moles bloke is as i havent listened to Radio 1 for decades.

I will say... you 1 listeners will move on--you`ll get older and drift to 5Live and Radio 2 etc.

I personally think the BBC is fantastic value for money...and if i ever was to pay for a licence--I would definetly say it was good value.

BBC3 & 4 def show programmes that interest me.

ITV on the other hand... its f**kin rubbish (apart from Monarch of the Glen and Upstairs Downstairs ;) )

However--- speaking of resources and salaries etc.. I was watching a docu about salaries in the Public Sector and that.

It is inherently wrong that an employee at the BBC is paid 200k more that the Chief of Defence of our country and something like, I think 16000 more people in NHS management are paid more than the PM.

It is just wrong.

TV and Radio are primarily entertainment/information mediums yeah?--how can people earn more money in that sphere than those who are in charge of defending our country etc.

Stinks... like this Moles bloke, and Wossy and that other twat Russell Brant.

(old) den

While I would love to have Mark & Lard back (and much though it pains me, I'd prefer to have Jo Whiley over Fearne), I see Radio 1 in the day as more of a mix of chat/'comedy'/music, and its not until the evening shows start that the music takes over.

I don't listen to the evening/night shows as much any more, but whenever I do they're always very listenable, no matter the genre. Shows like Rob Da Bank, Mike Davis, even Nick Grimshaw would die a death very quickly on a commercial station.

I agree that Radio 1 has become a mix of chat/"comedy"/music during the day, I just don't know why it's been allowed to happen. The arguement that was put forward for getting rid of 6 music was that it was competing with the commercial stations. This was of course a load of rubbish. Radio 1 does directly compete with the commercial station though. They've deliberately switched their programming to this more chat based style to compete.

I've just seen an advert on the telly advertising the Times online service - it's 104 pounds a year.

No wonder all of Murdoch's evil empire is rallying against the Beeb, if that is the kinda coin he wants folk to pay over for his newspaper on the web.

I wonder how many people will take that up in the end, not many i'd guess? Especially when you weigh it up against what's available on the Guardian webiste for example (although I doubt many times readers wouls sully themselves with the Guardian website).
