Liverpool

The Beatles came from there...

Which basically is the origin for most modern rock music

Seriously though...

I would either say Manchester or London

Just on the fact Manchester has spawned a lot of good bands, and different sounding bands

And London because its London... so many cultures become one... the amount genres of music from there has got to be huge.

I wish you'd spell Britain properly. But other than me being a SPAGNAZI I'm gonna lie to myself and all you lot and try to persuade you into thinking the answer is Birmingham.

Ocean Colour Scene (The thinking mans Oasis)

The Twang (err yeah)

Led Zep

Black Sabbath

Judas Priest

Slade

Wizzard

UB40

The Streets.

Okay so thats just about everyone to ever be born in Birmingham, to be honest it was slightly more impressive than I was expecting.

No offense intended, the opening post asks a pretty boring question. A more interesting one might be "What is it about a city that makes it a good platform for great bands?". Is it about class, money, the media, the local government, tradition, family, immigration, transport links? With the growth of the Internet will these local variations become obsolete as kids in small towns can now get on line and get noticed even if they live in rural Wiltshire and have no cash?

Manchester definitely. But a few things:

- Without sounding like a Man City fan, a lot of the great Manchester bands technically weren't Mancs, but Salfordians. But then I don't support City, and I class any band from the Manchester area (except The Verve, Elbow, The Courteeners and Inspiral Carpets) as Mancs.

- Where are Happy Mondays?

- What are Simply Red and The Ting Tings doing on there?

I hate it when people start discussions like this - it's either Manchester or London; North or South - a deliberate attempt to start some sort of divide.

Homestly? The best bands always start in different pockets of the country and eventually end up in London. It doesn't matter where they come from; it's where they end up, and they usually end up in London - which is why a lot of music is shit nowadays.

The reason why most British bands (even a lot of international bands) end up in London is because London is where most bands think the end of the rainbow is. It has this inviting allure about it. Like, it's where everybody is and it's where everything is - the fact is, London is the biggest piece of shit on the planet and it's the worst place for any musician to go save for maybe Los Angeles. The studios down there are like cattle farms and the venues are the worst paying, most digusting places on earth, run by the biggest pieces of shit you'll ever meet. The audience is made up of w*nkers as well usually.

The best bands that come out of London are the bands that 'know' what I've just said - ie. 70s Punk bands, and even all of them died on their arses when the big city types threw suitcases of cash at them. The best bands in general are the ones who wait for London to come to them but tell it to f**k off. I'm still waiting for a band that does that.
