efest ranks 1264 on the web ....not bad

Are those figures up or down from previous years?

I'm not entirely sure. They're probably around what they've been for the last few years.

However, the site linked to in the first post of this thread isn't one I've heard of previously, and so I've no idea how accurate their data is or how it might compare with what is generally considered the best ratings site - alexa.com. Alexa says it's current UK rating is actually 3,982.

The numbers alexa gives for efests traffic tho are actually a fair bit lower than the numbers really are. I presume that their margins of error are the same for all sites tho, so it's useful for comparisons.

As for the value the site linked to in the first post gives, that's hugely more than most other rating sites are giving at the moment - it's normally been sub-$100k in the last year, presumably because the value of websites in general has crashed.

How is the value calculated? Is it an educated guess? Or is there more to it?

I'd guess that someone somewhere has calculated an average value to an average website of each visitor it gets and the number of pages that visitor reads, and then the value it states for efests is based on that.

What efests is worth on standard business valuations - which is based on turnover and profit from that turnover - is far lower than that website states.

They look at revenue, profit and assets, Efests doesn't really have that much in assests (apart from Neil's contacts and know how) and the revenue is about £10k a year and a profit of £6k if memory serves me right and generally they take a comapnay's profit x 10 (may be lower now because of the recession) plus assets, so around £65-70k my guess would be but there's more than one way of doing it.

Where the f**k have you got those made-up numbers from? The businesses expenses - excluding staff costs (which are the greatest expense of all) - are hugely more than you state for turnover.

utterly wrong. That's only about half the average (across a year) unique monthly users, and the page views per visit (as opposed to unique users) is around double that.

But of course the traffic is seasonal, and that page doesn't make clear if the numbers they give are what they think the average is, or if it's from a specific month.

With all these things - including the rating reports used by the ad industry - the numbers they give are quite a way out. But as long as they're getting all sites wrong by around the same propertion, it doesn't matter too much I guess.

Seems a strange way to calculate a value for something. Its like calculating the value of a shop by counting the number of people that go into it, even if they dont make purchases. Surely a better way would be to calculate the number of people that click on websites from Efests??

Not so strange at all. The value of shops certainly uses footfall &/or potential footfall as a part of their value.

Unless those ranking sites used real financial data from every website - which of course they don't have real-time access to (the best they could get would be from companies submitted accounts, which would cost them money to get hold of, plus an awful lot of work to collect for all sites, and would be a year+ out of date when they got them) - then there's no way for them to come up with a number which actually reflects the reality.
