it's so annoying; you have to wait for the x to appear to close it, then wait for another x to appear to fully close it. and it appears every time i come onto the site

basically i've been staying away - checking once in the morning and if the ad's still there not coming back all day. i used to like browsing this forum but not any more.

i understand that the site needs ads to operate, and i've turned my adblocker off on this site so efests gets as much revenue as possible, but this ad is driving me away - it's so intrusive.

I've kind of got used to it on my laptop but just had the surprise of it opening on my HTC! None too happy about that but it will all be gone soon.

I spent many years in advertising in one form or another but have been out of it since just about the time where online advertising began to boom.

I like advertising. It can work.

However, I always wonder when I see these ads online... do they work?

How many people take any notice of them?

Personally, although I take notice of em because of the above... I do deplore them.

Obviously, firms have budgets for advertising etc but i do wonder if monies would be better spent on other areas than a little box between posts on here which the vast majority of people totally ignore.

Interesting.

Presume there's studies on all this Den? Or does it simply work cos the advertisers say so, or cos the buyer invests enough to feel that it works?

& do the really annoying ads on TV work better than the straight ones? e.g. The mouthwash ad with the explosion in the mouth? Or the 'opera singer' for Go Compare! Both annoying FTR.

Unlike nearly all other forms of advertising, the effects of online advertising is measurable. The likes of TV or magazine ads are not.

So online advertising is known to work in a way that traditional advertising is not.

I missed Mad Men when it first came out and i've just caught up in the last few weeks and finished season 4 episode 4 yesterday. Its soo good, i've enjoyed it thoroughly, but i think i might have thought it was a bit slow if i'd had to watch it week by week for the last 4 seasons. :D

I suppose I was one of those Mad Men..but for very different reasons!

I was expecting the answer to my measurability question to be that.

And tbh, as has been said--its bollocks really.

Has anybody on here actually clicked on any ad on here? (apart from mistakenly!)

I suspect it would be below 2% max.

But, awareness is the key. We might be seeing these ads on here, and walking along the street sometime---and want to buy a snack.

We go into a shop and peruse the goods on offer...and when we go back outside, we scratch our heads wondering just why we`ve bought a SQUARE.

Now...thats advertising!
